This is attached between the speedometer and the speedometer cable. I
have no idea what it does.
Edited to add that I now know it is the back-up light switch
It is screwed to where the speedo cable
would go normally.
It is not allowing me to hook up the speedo cable beacuse the reciever
inside this attachment is to far recessed for the cable
to reach the square hole....does anyone have any ideas
what this is or even what it does? My car is on up on blocks right now
and I'm trying to do some front end work, as I would go ahead and see
what it did with it off, but I can't right now.

It's a back-up light switch, used befor they put the simpler one in the nose cone.

The switch insied the housing senses the direction of revolution of the cable. When it goes backwards (yes, your speedo can run backwards), the switch contacts close, completing the circuit and lighting the backup lamps. _________________ Jason Hamilton

Does your car still have the backup lights on the rear bumper? I imagine they didn't work....since you had no speedo cable. I would leave that in the car. When you hook the speedo back up you will have the switch working again.... |

The problem with the speedo cable is the inside wire(the one that actually
spins) does not protrude out far enough to catch this "extra" attachment.
It is rececessed at least an 1" to where it catches and the speedo wire only
protrudes out approx. 1/2" from the sheathing.
Clear as mud..
Rendering the speedo and the back-up light inoperable. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SLIzSCt_cg&list=FLIX26sGa8__1F1loczLPTtg&index=2 |

I didn't catch whether you had back up lights on the rig or not.
if you don't, then leave the switch out.
I have some of these switches at the shop and some speedo cables. Let me take a look at how they go together and see if I can come up with a fix.

There must be a longer cable, how else would it work? You probably have a cable for a later car. |

Since this is a dead topic, I am going to fathom a guess.
I am now guessing the cable is no different, as they are all listed as 56-71...I wonder what 55 ghias use And 72-74 (understandable as it was a different speedo)
So my guess is there is a lengthening piece on the switch which extends into the speedo.....and its missing. KGPNR doesn't have any pictures of the switch... |

As it is now the speedo cable WILL work in to the speedometer, but once
I install this back-up switch the speedo cable wire doesn't engage the
square cog which is recessed half-way in the switch.
But it sounds like you are right and there is an additional piece missing.
Thanks once again for looking at this problem with me. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SLIzSCt_cg&list=FLIX26sGa8__1F1loczLPTtg&index=2 |

Ok, I have one on my 58. Its a pretty simple install. On the one open end of the b/u light switch there is a plastic square post that once your b/u light switch is screwed onto your speedo should slide into it, just like the speedo cable would. On the other open end, the one with the square hole, thats where the speedo slides and screws into. Thats pretty much it, mine works like a charm. I dont see that you are missing anything, unless your square plastic post is broken or missing.
Hope this helps. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

I appreciate the response, hopefully I can get it resolved now,
but I'm sorry but I don't follow you on this, can you try to explain it again.
I can't help but feel that something is missing in all this and I believe it is
the "square plastic post" that you are referring to, you wouldn't happen to
have a picture would you?? _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SLIzSCt_cg&list=FLIX26sGa8__1F1loczLPTtg&index=2 |

Ya, sorry, its kinda hard to explain. I dont have a pic because its on my car right now. I guess if you want a pic I could snap one for ya. Let me know.
What I was trying to say was that on the one open end if you look in the whole there should be a square post. That end screws into the back of the speedo. The other end, with the open square hole is where the speedo cable screws into. Now, I had another one on my other car. On that one the plastic post actually broke off inside the speedo and when it did the speedo stopped working. The light still came on but the speedo didnt work. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

That is what I thought it did but the cable out of the end of the sheath
doesn't allow the cable to engage both the back up light and the
speedometer. 70 140 mentioned that I had the wrong cable but there
is only one for 56-71

So with that said I still think there is something that extends the end of
the cable to engage both the back up light and the speedometer.
It has been over a year now so obviously I'm in no hurry, but if you ever
get a chance maybe you could post a picture of how yours is hooked up. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SLIzSCt_cg&list=FLIX26sGa8__1F1loczLPTtg&index=2 |
