I know I've seen this before but I searched and didn't find it.
My fuel sender (made in 5/64, same month as my car) is reading empty when it has half a tank. I sealed the tank a month ago and a bunch of gunk came out of the sender after it dried out, but it still reads empty with a half tank This is the original sender and the local parts and salvage yards don't have any that work. What can I do to rebuild it or otherwise solve my problem? _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

You may have sealer in the sender. When I pulled the sender out of the car I bought about a month ago, the bottom of the sender was covered in sealer.
BTW, I do not recommend sealing any VW tank, FI or carbed. The sealers do more harm than good.
I ended up haveing to replace my tank. because of the sealer. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I sealed the tank without the sender in it. And it had the problem before I sealed the tank, I was hoping that all the crud that I shook out of it would fix the issue, but it didn't.
So far I've been very happy with the sealed tank. I had rust issues... BAD rust issues. But it's a month later and my fuel filter is still clean! What issues would I have with my sealed tank? It's a stock dual carb car. _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

All you need is a new sender or your going to have to ground your sending unit. I was told to run an aux. wire from anywhere on the body that you can ground and use the wire on one of the screws on the sending unit. If your fuel gauge reads full then your gauge works properly, But if doesn't then either your sending unit needs replacing or your gauge has gone bad. Most likely the sending unit will need replacing as the gauges usually last a long time. This is what I have done and found that indeed my sending unit has gone bad. Hope this helps. _________________ 71 sqbk, 1641cc dp engine, manual trans |

Take the sender out of the tank, and hook a gound wire to the housing, and the gage wire to its normal terminal.
Now, when the unit is upside down, the gage should read full, when it is rightside up, it should read empty.
I have never thought to ask, are you still 6V or has the car been converted to 12V?? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

She's still 6V. I'll try both your ideas and let you know what happens. Thanks! _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack
