|
|
While changing my oil today (89 carat, 2.1 engine) i noticed that the little hose that connects to the oil cooler to the water pump is on the verge of splitting. Looking through the manual I could find a specific instructions on replacing this particular hose.
It looks straight forward enough but I would rather not have to drain any coolant if possible. Is there a way to do this without draining any coolant, or just a bit of coolant?
thanks |

Work really fast...
Seriously, its gonna be messy. When did you last change coolant?
If you are even close to being due, just drain it all.
Otherwise, have the buckets ready. I think the whole system is ~ 16 litres,
I'd think you'll easy get half of that coming out. ie 8 litres _________________ Gerald P

Now I speak in a general sense....my 1.9 doesn't have the exact
hose you are using, but the theory is the same.
Any chance you could plug one pipe as you pull one end of the hose off?
And plug the hose with your thumb/palm. Hey, the kids can help!!
A strategy of unplug/cap/new hose etc might limit the loss
and bleed issues. _________________ Gerald P

In theory that might be do-able, but it is such a tight area that I would think that there wouldn't be enough room to do that.
If anyone has accomplished this though I would love to hear it. |

sorry, but can you clarify your 'no'?
Yes the coolant must be drained, or no the coolant does not need to be drained?
thanks |

You asked a yes or no question. I thought it would be most clear to you, since you asked it, that implied in your casual construction is the precursor "Is it necessary to..." The answer is no. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Sorry for not being more specific then.
If it is possible to do this job without draining coolant could you provide some details or point to where I should look. I've looked through my Bentley and through several threads here and haven't found anything that applies to this specific hose replacement or whether the coolant needs to go first. |

Also, the casual construction of the thread title was because I was trying to capture as much info within the allowed character limit. I dropped the 'is it necessary to' so that the gist of the thread would be clear. |

I just did this not too long ago. I lost very little coolant on my 87 2wd. The expansion tank will drain through this hose so you can empty the tank with a turkey baster or you can pinch the hose at the bottom of the tank hose clamps (or needle nose visegrips and protective material like rags). Suggest you replace all the hoses to the cooler if one is bad they should all be replaced. I did the bad one and found the others were no good the next day. Oh Well. I also clamped the radiator hoses to keep that full. Good Luck. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)
