I am the often confused owner of an early 1986 Westy and thought it would be useful to collect all the oddities about this partial model year in one place for others who suffer. (I also own a 1973.5 Pooschey 911, and it has all sorts of weird things on it too.)

my VIN = WV2ZB0257GH 025 811 - early ’86

It has all sorts of wiring that does not match the Bentley manual fuse listing; e.g. on page 97.67 is a notation re (very early) 1986 “up to VIN G 055 689”

I've heard that a 1986 Vanagon with a VIN in the 028xxx to 029xxx should be around August to September production, so mine was manufactured much earlier, but I'm not sure when.

I also discovered that the relays in the engine compartment for the fuel pump and engine ECU are different from everyone else's relays.

What else is different?

Mine VIN is around GH125000 and was manufactured in juni of '86. As I know the model year stamp was changes in every august. The 25000th should be manufactured in september.

then it must be correct Wink

You never know what the previous owners changed/repaired in an old car. I think in the factory they changed the old/new parts when the stocked ones were out. But neihter the official VW repair books are correct in some times.
