Hi Folks,
I finally got a little time to fiddle with pushing a new clutch cable through the Bowden Tube and connected it to the lever on the trans side (adjusting wing nut is on), and the pedal is connected as well- though I'm not entirely sure I put the clevis back on the right way. The play is not right. I push down and the pedal just kind of sits there instead of springing back. Anyway, I'm quitting for now and will resume in the morning. I need a manual. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
Eric

A lot of the clutch cables you find these days are about a 1/2 inch too long. They are a pain to deal with as there is not enough thread to be able to properly tighten the cable.

Clutch return spring at tranney was broken on Olde leroy and would work but did not have enough tension to make it return petal quickly and completely. Yours may be same problem, only its sticking in place. I also cleaned up all the componets at petal assembly and greased with lithium.

I've never run into one of those. Are you sure you have the metal (stock) or plastic bowden tube?

No doubt at all, laid it out next to the old one and it was 1/2 inch or more longer. Took it back and all the ones on the shelf were the same length. This was about three years ago and I heard several complaints from others at the same time.

you can use 211 721 335 E, which is the cable for a 68-71 bus, it is 15mm shorter. you also need to use the 68-71 clevis pin.

Thanks everyone. I got it done. Not too bad. A lot easier than I expected, especially adjusting the wingnut. A gloved hand and a locking pliers helps. Didn't jack it up so it was pretty tight under there and it's raining today so a little messy but I'm prety much done. I'll order a few things to replace (the Bowden Tube is going -- just a few cracks in the rubber-, and the rubber boots for the pedal are pretty gone). I also kinked the cable the other day trying to jam it thru the tube. Lots of grease is what worked eventually. I straightened the kink out as much as I could while tightening the wingnut. It seems to work fine. Just like it did a few weeks back before it snapped off. Or better. Now I can get it over to my parking space off street. It's supposed to freeze tonight. No salt will touch her -- 74 Westy Dual carb camper named Betsy.
Thanks people. It's a great feeling

You might get a little stretch on the new cable. So you may have to go back under the bus to give it a little more adjustment. I like to give a new clutch cable an initial adjustment. Then run it through its travel by pressing the pedal five or six times to see how it feels and to stretch the cable. Then give it a final adjustment if it needs it. Idea

I guess that's to offset the fact that all the accel cables I can find are about 1/2 too darn short!!!! Smile

Make sure you are carrying a spare, because that kinked cable won't last as long. Not saying it will break tomorrow, but eventually the stress will probably make it fail in the location of the kink.

I usually carry several spares of the clutch and accel cable.

Next time you are in there, take a close look at the clutch pedal area where the clevis is inserted and see if it is elongating. Also check the lever on the tranny. Either of those can wear out and cause problems too.

I have a 1972 Bus. I installed a new clutch cable. I can't get it adjusted. I used up all of the threads and the pedal doesn't make contact until it is near the floor.

I see from the old posts that others have had this problem. What is the solution?
Please help

the bowden tube, black shield at the end point of the transaxle, requires 'sag'
via a washer or three, four. You get the idea. The sag at the bowden tube acts as a preload & then the clutch cable lives a nice loooooong life. No preload, you get six to seven weeks and do it again the right way.
The washers are applied at the nipple like end of the tube, which forms a droop
at the welded perch on the rear torsion tube, so there's a sag in the tube down there, once you have 3/4" or more of sag the cable should begin adjusting in proper fashion & you will have decent pedal 'feel'.
If you have no washers at the end of your bowden tube, I see a visit to the hardware store in your future. Take the bowden tube with you to get the right size.

Compare the length of your old and new cable, the stretched and frayed older cable should be a bit longer.
