Has anyone tried or know if you can use a pointed bumper to make a slashed bumper. I have 2 pointed rear truck bumpers and I need a slashed rear truck bumper. But as of now no luck finding one. I was wondering if I could cut off the ends and weld on slashed ends from a slashed rear bus bumper to make a slashed rear truck bumper.

There is no difference in truck and bus rear bumpers post 1960*. Don't waste 2 bumpers to make one for your truck...

*Clara- as of 5 Jan 1960, at VIN 554 147 the rear bumper was standardardised... same for bus and truck. You don't need the 59- 60 1/2 rear truck bumper.

Wow that is great news. I did a search on slashed bumpers and did not see that thread.

Thank you very much for that info. I really was not looking forward to doing this, but I just can't stand my front slashed and pointed rear!!!

I always wondered about that cross section (slash v point) too. They say the pointed are stronger but how? thicker? higher tensile? shape? My '65 has both but that 's the way VW did it.

dont do it man. post an ad. i recently traded my slashed bumpers for two pointed ones for my 67. took a while to find them in the right nice shape, but i found them. that'll be easier than cutting and welding shit up.

Almost did that myself! Shocked

But found a "smashed" repro slash for $20. If found this cheap, I wouldn't have problem slicing & dicing. These repro bumpers are pretty thin and soft compared to og ones. Matter'O'factly the repro is the one I grafted over the trailer hitch! Razz

I remember reading here that 65 busses had a slash front and pointed rear but can't find it now. My bus was born on 4/22/65 and I bought it with the rear bumper missing but the front is a slash and looks og. Anyone know what the last date for slashed rear bumper was? I bought a 67 donor bus to complete my 65 deluxe and I have the pointed rear from it.
Thanks.

My 65 has slashed front and pointed rear. Yours is the same, right Barry? Do you really think that was stock? If so, that's kinda cool and I'll leave mine that way just so I can tell all the "experts" that that's the way it came.

Really, that's how VW did it in '65. A few earlies supposedly were slash slash but most were point slash. And get this: the deluxe trim was opposite, point on slash and vice versa.

So I won't need to hunt for a slash bumper but now I need to find "slash" deluxe trim?

I've seen late '65s with point trim on point bumpers but see what others say about their '65s and issue date.
