I would also like to know if this will do the job. I need to do my RGBs. Seems inexpensive!! |

At first, I couldn't figure out how this puller was supposed to work, but yesterday I found these images from the Draper catalog.
The puller itself:
It has little semi-spherical balls on tips that screw into the puller arms. You're supposed to drill out the cage that holds the balls in the bearing, insert the puller tips, and rotate 90 degrees:
Then you just pull off the bearing:
I've never done an RGB rebuild before, but it seems that this puller should work. It doesn't look super strong and I get the feeling that Draper is the Harbor Freight of the UK, but unless the bearings are really frozen in place it seems like it could theoretically work. _________________ '64 standard microbus

Picked these up today:
They're Rillex 6304 pullers, designed for a slightly smaller bearing than the rest of the pullers in this thread. According to the bearing reference, the only 6304 bearing in use on a VW is the drive shaft front bearing on old split-case transaxles.
I was curious how this puller compares to the other Rillex 6306 puller. Is the central threaded puller part the same? Are the 6306 collets usable on this puller?
These ones seem to fit OK on a 6305 bearing I had laying around. Not sure if they'll fit on a 6306, which is even bigger. _________________ '64 standard microbus

I got the Baum tools type puller from Sir tools.
Not happy with the service, it took almost a year to get everything right, so I won't link to them.
The puller kit, however works just fine.
Another one I researched was the Simatec Simatool BP-61 puller kit.
If anyone knows where to find this and at what price, the kit looks good, so please let us know. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Were those the ones off CL today? If so I tried to get them and they poster wouldn't answer back. Looks nice and good score!! |

I have two 6306 pullers. I do not know if the threaded shafts are the same as yours,it appears so. my 6306 puller is much longer, possibly double. no the 6306 collet will not work on the smaller 6304 puller. I would not recommend interchanging them each collet is made to fit inside the outer race fully. While doing this it holds the puller arms on the inner race. by using the 6304 puller on a 6305 bearing you run the risk of bending the tips as the 6304 collet won't slide far enough to cover the tip ends fully. good luck with your new find. I am looking for another 6306 collet and a broken 6306 puller to steal a few arms to fix another puller if you happen to find one on CL
Also if the puller in the rear of the pic was the one you used on the 6305 bearing it looks like it bent the heck out of it the arms should be straight no bent. and the arms fit between each bearing. larger bearings have more balls. My 6306 pullers have 8 arms. so if you try and pull a 6306 with that puller it will ruin the puller. when installed the collet sits up against the bearing with the thinner lip tucked inside the bearing if out you can bend the tips. _________________ April 3rd 62 standard mgr/pw

Thanks for the info...I did pick these up on CL the other day.
The puller in the back was bent when I got it...I suppose that's why it fit into the 6305 bearing I had. The unbent one doesn't fit.
Now that you mention that the 6306 puller has 8 arms I can see that this puller I have would never work on that bearing. It only has 7 arms. I suppose that a 6306 bearing has 8 balls and the 6305 and 6304 bearings only have 7 balls.
Interesting that each puller only really works on one kind of bearing. _________________ '64 standard microbus

Ones I've seen at transmission shops for pulling stub axle bearings are long enough to fit over the long splined part, too. |

don't give up - you will eventially find one....I watched e-bay for a year and would bid on several and never get them - then low and behold a couple of months ago i saw a man with 3 of them in atlanta with no reserve.......I won two of them one for the 6306 bearing and one for the 6305....I helped a friend of mine pull his stub axle bearing off two weeks ago.... it was effortless. _________________ SOUTHERN INTEGRITY AIRCOOLERS

Yikes, $740 does sound steep, but damn, it looks like it would pull both the 7 and 8 ball bearings.
I'll check on my Sir Tools part number and get back.
I believe I spent around $450, and waited nearly a year to get it right.
The first set they sent had a thread mis-match between the inner and outer pieces. The threads were so tight, you couldn't get the assembly to do the job.
Edit:
The Sir Tools is a Model #242 Body (the outer sleeve with the extraction threaded rod)
With a 242-A gripper for the 8 ball bearing, and a 242-B gripper for the 7 ball.
It also includes a 245-5 extension sleeve for the lower outer bearing to fit over the stub axle. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS
