Chris, it'll most probably need 145's on the front if you go another notch.

I know but even the prototype australian fasty was 4 lug.

is this not a ts, but a base model, therefore drum brakes? does it have a clock? I would think that any deluxe model would have had discs even in aus. Any documentation that it is originally 5 lug? I'm very interested in this

It's a TS. Yep, has a clock. It's typical of an Australian "parts bin" car. On the cusp of a new model, it's not unusual to get a bit of both models. I'll post some pics of the rest of the car next week.

68 is not the "cusp of a new model" to me. the 5 lug change over would have been 66. please do post pics, and maybe the first couple #'s of your vin

Erik. I'm certainly no expert in type 3 land, and I have to say this car is certainly making it difficult to make sense of things, but for us in Australia, I think it was 69-70 before we went to the later bodied cars and with them came disc brakes. However, I believe there were earlier cars with discs.???
So as "notchboy" mentioned, Volkswagen Australia was doing its own thing pretty much. We were always a year behind you with bugs and T2's as well.
Chassis number is 318022895

I would say it was on the "cusp" because in '69 IRS was out. They were using the last of the old stuff they had. According to the VIN he posted, it was a pretty early 68.

68-69 was when VW of Germany took back full controll I belive. I got most of my memory info from that "other" VWs of the world book that Simon guy wrote.

Simon Glenn wrote that book. It has some weird and unusual cars in it like 5 lug drum brakes, and swing axles on a 1302 super beetle in South Africa. Shocked Or some of the re-badged Toyota pickups sold as VWs. Or the Gol (VW Fox in the USA), using an upright air cooled bug engine, before getting the inline 4 cylinder rabbit engine. Wink I used to have a Fox, and always thought a type3 engine would fit nicely in there, only to read they originally had a bug engine in them from the start. Shocked

I don't like RHD or fastbacks all that much, but I'd proudly pimp that one!!

Wow.

I have never seen those little black covers on the carburetor pivots. Did someone add those?

Mmmmm..don't know. Not sure what you mean Everett. Doubt there were any later additions. Maybe an Aussie peculiarity.
