Anyone know how this works? Do you have to remove material from the back to make the light shine through? Or just taking the skin off lets it out?

Those pumpkin-carving kits use this technique a lot...you take the outer skin off, and the light shines through the pulp.

Anthony, Taking the outer skin off allows the light thru, the thinner the wall the better it shines thru , so yes... scrape the inside some more to get a better glow. Or cut the skin a bit deeper but NOT thru Wink

I didn't even carve mine like I planned! I need to cut it up and boil it for pumpkin pies and turnovers.

Take ready made pie crust dough, boil your pumpkin with cinn., nut meg and sugar until it is soft enough to mash like potatos. Scrape the stuff pumpkin from the rine, mash it to the consistancy of potatos add more nutmeg, cinn and sugar. place your ready to make crust our shaped like turnovers and bake. The spanish term is impanada(sp) this was always a treat after Halloween other than Pies and Pumpkin bread. Wait a minute is this a shot at the spelling of turnover Crofty? Razz
