My December of 56 Euro Karmann Ghia, was shipped to Dortmond Germany and has a "Made in Western Germany" tag on the body. I know it's not a bug, but I'm noting the year and port destination _________________ -Shaggy

Was it cut out of a VIN tag or something?

I was going to say the same, looks like a cropped VIN tag from a later model VW _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |

I've never seen a later tag with "GMBH." If they were used, it was only for a very short period at the 1960/61 model year changeover. _________________ Thanks,

I bought a 1957 Type 1 here in Chile about 4 months ago. Have not purchased the birth certificate, but it says "MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY" on the tag. |

Any Kiwi or South African CKD oval owners out there? |
My car went to Portugal, plate was replaced by other one made by the local dealer at that "Guerin" (Rua Restauradores, Lisboa). Almost same size... _________________ 1957 Typ 113 - Polarsilver

My 61 here in California has the western Germany but it’s all on one plate. Is it a good thing to have the western Germany one or something?

This thread shows Bob Wilson's authenticity book says that bugs built between 1955 and 1959 have the Madde in West Germany plate there is a January 14th 1955 car with the Made in west Germany plate and the latest car with a Made in Germany plate is listed as an Oct 54 can anyone with a later built 1954 confirm if their car has the Made in Germany plate also |

Yeah, it seems that there's a switch to the 'Made in Western Germany' between Oct '54 and Jan '55. It would be cool to finally figure this mystery out after so many years of the start of this thread. _________________ Cheers,

My March 1955 Sedan has "Made in Western Germany" and was delivered to the West Coast.
My November 1955 Sedan ('56 MY) does not have the badge. It was delivered to Washington State. |

My April 8 1957 Bug does not have the tag on it and has no holes that would suggest it ever did. Car was originally delivered in Germany. |
