they use a slightly larger hole than the stock trim too.(7mm?)
they didn't use rubber grommets either.

I know I've seen those clips before. MGA/MGB? Anyway, I've seen them, and I've used them, because I have a dim memory of them being a real pain in the ass to work with,

If they're old, they are a pain. They lose their spring and become brittle. When you try to install them, they either stay compress and don't spring back open or they snap. The new replacements have lots of spring and are easy to install. They hold really tight as well. My biggest problem with them is that you can't seal the holes like you can with the standard trim clip seals.

Old topic I know... but I search before posting..

I just picked up a full set of VW20 Flash Trim from another Samba member who noticed my ad and was local to me...

They are slated for my 1961 Convertible... Red paint with Black insert.

I really DONT want to drill the body.. just for the trim.. and I really dont want to paint the black..
So...I've been brain storming...
My plans are to insert aluminum tabs or a strip within the trim and use double sided molding tape to secure to the body.
As opposed to painting Black within the trim lines ..at an extra body shop 2 tone cost.. in hopes they get it right.....
I am planning Black Vinyl wrap over the red.
That way.. if I want a change... its possibly..possible...
Thats the plan right now anyway...

I fought with that decision for a while too before I broke out the drill. I also thought about wrapping the insert rather than painting. Instead, I've decided not to paint the insert and run as it for the time being. A little more subtle approach. I can always add paint later if I want it to pop a little more.

Is there a chart for the clip hole placement? or does one simply sit the chrome strips on and trace it?

I've never seen a template before. I just measured it 20 times then traced it. My trim wasn't perfect side to side either. It needed some tweaking.

When... I finally get to my 61 convertible... (2nd inline) Ill show the end result..

My trim is a little different from side to side and will need tweaken' as well.
The front quarter trim spear ....has always perplexed me on the odd placement. Especially when 2 tone treatment is chosen.. Just an odd end of a decent looking trim and paint line.. IMO.
Mine will be 2 tone no doubt..
I have been thinking of not using the front quarter spears, ending the trim at the door line.. ...... but knowing me... Ill have to use it all....(Sigh) Laughing
