Ya'll are fantastic.

I found another set that might work. They are 16s from a SLK 320.

I'm installing longer rear studs now, so it seems I would need front spacers and to drill out the lug holes based on learning about all this.

Sound right? No boring the center hole for the grease cap?

^^

Those wheels are 16x7 ET37 (front) and 16x8 ET30 (rear). I would recommend thin spacers for the front, new lugs front and rear, and you will need new rear studs. You will need to drill out the lug holes, but the center bores are already the correct size. Center caps will not fit, but there are solutions to that problem.

Yeah, that's the appeal of MB rims over VAG rims; there's no machining required. Just drill the lug holes. I'm also running staggered 16" SLK rims on my van. I bought the hardware from T3. The biggest PITA is pulling the rear hubs to press out/in the lug studs.

i want 15" rims and i'll just make this simple: what is the easiest (as in least amount of modifications) route?

i'm thinking south african steelies but even they have their downsides.
what's wrong with these?

Still need to center bore them to 66.56mm.

I put this over on the ultimate wheel thread, but I realized this really should be posted here to keep info in one place. On that thread Christopher Shimke noted that these would need "tuner" lugs due to the narrow lug holes, but for a syncro it's otherwise direct fit.

Hi I'm considering a second set of wheels for winter, and I've fallen down the rabbit hole (it's deep down here, send snacks!)

I did a search and had not seen these previously mentioned. Vision Cross 426 7.0 x 16", ET38, 5x112, bore of 73.1mm, load rating of 1800 lbs. Best of all, they are cheaper than steelies!

Love the color, but not sure how I feel about the classic BBS sport look on a syncro.

Found a set of these wheels and wondering if they can fit a syncro without spacers. TIA.

Yes, they will fit a Syncro without spacers, but they do require small ball seat lug nuts, not the large ball seat lugs that the Vanagon/Syncro steel wheels use.

I installed those vision wheels on my 2wd in the spring most because they were cheap. I had to install thin spacers on the front to clear front suspension and bore out the outside of the rim to clear the front dust cap. I have not yet figured out center cap. But for the price they are a great deal. John

Thanks John,

Center bore should be bigger than required, also syncro gets a little more room for higher offset in the front that a 2wd.

Picked them up last night for $200

Should fit a Syncro great. No spacers, no longer lugs, no center bore issue, no rubbing. Pretty much true for 2wd as well.
Are there more available at that price and if so where?

Mark

I can’t vouch for how those wheels will fit on a synchro, but to clarify what I said before, when I tried to bolt them on the front of my van, the rim was contacting the top of the front suspension. I don’t know how thick my spacer ended up being, but I cut the center out of an Audi brake disk to make a the spacer that would clear. When they advertise the size of the center bore the wheel will bolt on but the hole steps in where the dust cap pushes into the wheel. This only required taking off a very small amount of material. Additionally, the grease cap didn’t fit through the whole without clearancing it. The grease cap sticking out through the front wheel if cleaned up nicely looks fine and doesn’t require any other center cap on a two wheel drive van. On the rears the wheels bolt right on, but the axle nut sticks out beyond the wheel so the center cap won’t fit. The next time I have a reason to take the wheels off my van I will come up with a solution to this, but I have not gotten there yet. I bought my wheels from Town Fair Tire. I don’t know if they still have them available or not. Mine came with all new lug nuts and lug studs. The lug studs for the front and the lug nuts for the back have different outside sizes. So you need to carry two special tools, one for the front and one for the back to take them on and off. When I purchased these wheels, I was able to buy them whole sale. It cost me less than just installing properly rated 14 inch tires. So for me it was a no brainer. The minor inconvenience for having to make a spacer for a wheel that was supposed to bolt right on was worth the effort. They were advertised as bolt on for the van. I would just hate to see someone buy them that didn’t have the skills or equipment to make them work as easily as I did. If anybody cares, I could send pictures tomorrow or Saturday to show what I mean about th e grease cap sticking through the wheel. John

Here are just a few photos of what I was talking about.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The wheel fits no problem, but the axel nut sticks out too far to put the center cap on the rear wheels.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I had to add a spacer so the rim would not rub on the steering knuckle.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As you can see the grease cap sticks out through the front wheel. The rim needs minor clearanceing for the grease cap to fit through. I actually like the way the grease cap looks sticking out through the wheel. I may try to figure out how to make the rear ones look like the front ones. I still think these are excellent wheels for the van, and when I purchased them they came with all the hardware to bolt them on - new lug nuts and wheel studs. I think at the price point I paid for them they were an excellent value. John

Too expensive and wouldn't really fit the vibe of my syncro but if someone wanted to look TRULY unique, these rare wheels should be a direct fit:

Can anyone identify what wheels these are? I think it's a nice style on the Vanagon.

The big question is, since they appear to be directional with those blades are there two "lefts" and two "rights?" While I'm sure it does not affect the function, I'd want to see a pic of all four before deciding.
