Douglas Adams, Hitch hikers Guide, 42 the answer to life the universe & everything?
My '74's sorta male, but it's still in touch with it's female side. Answers to the androgenous name of Custard. hmmm, think I gotta change that... |

Both my busses (former and current) are males. Couldn't bear to think of myself doing what I do to these busses to a female. Too cruel. But recently out here in Seattle, questions were asked about calling the USS Abraham Lincoln a "she". Seemed kind of weird. Then it turns out that several international agencies (shipping listers and even the AP Style Guide) decided to just call ships "it". That doesn't sound good either. Then I came across this anonymous explanation, as printed in the Seattle Times:
"A boat is called "she" because there is always a great deal of bustle around her; there is usually a gang of men about; she has a waist and stays; it takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good. It is not the initial expense that breaks you it's the upkeep. She can be decked out; it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly, and without a man at the helm she is uncontrollable. She often shows her bottom and when coming into harbor always heads for the buoys".
Not exactly PC (not that I give a darn), but thought it might add to the conversation.

My 69 Bug is definately female... No matter how good I treat her She always has something to whine about. I'm always up way too late giving her the attention she needs. She always has a mental breakdown when I need her the most and She's never reliable. She does keep me busy which is a good thing. |

my '71 squareback is a girl, her name is "hilary". nothing to do with the ex-president's wife, that's just what her name was when she was given to me so i wasn't about to re-name her. my hubby's '67 bug is also a girl, when he got her we were going to give her a nice german name, but all we kept coming up with were ugly names like "hildegard" and "gertrude" so we ditched that idea and ended up calling her "jenny". ) |
