so i guess my brother killed the generator because we just replaced it with agenerator we knew nothing about off of an old engine. so we put it in and the red light went out and got maybe 2,000 miles out of it and now its doing the same thing as the old one where the red light is always on. i've changed the regulator and cleaned all the contacts. is it really the generator? I'm getting tired of putting new generators in just to have them die. its a 1600 sp 12v bus. any suggestions. its to the point where i'm ready to take it off the road for winter and do work to it anyways. but i need a car for school because i travel 150 miles a week. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Hi orangebug60guy,
Did you polarize the generator before you put it in?? Have you checked that the gen brushes are longer/taller than the cages they sit in? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Is your regulator matched to your generator, as in the correct one for the particular model of generator? There's a few different ones. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

What about testing it. See if its producing voltage and amperage. if its working Its the wiring. So test it at the battery. if it tests good there then its the wiring to the warning light. _________________ Cool runnins,

just because generator and regulator are both Bosch does not mean they are compatible, there are different regulators for bus and beetle. post info stamped on gen and reg to see if you have a correct match up. i get my brushes from a vw parts place. make sure you get 6v if 6 v and 12 v if 12 v brushes. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

unless you have the big diameter 6V generator which uses the '12V' brushes
does the light stay on all the time?
or does it come on at idle?
come on w/ revs?
random? |

To echo the sentiments of one of our club elders, "all this talk and you have not used a voltmeter yet?"
When I had this problem, I used my trusty voltmeter to find that my regulator had gone bad (to the tune of my gen putting out copious amounts of voltage).
New $36 solid state Bosch regulator and BINGO, no more red light and only 14V going to the battery terminals. _________________ Turbo_g

I must agree. If you need some coaching on where and how to test the system Im sure we would all be happy to point you in the right direction. I think a cheap digital multi meter is one of the handiest things a VW owner can have. Even better a really good one. Don't just start throwing parts at it without testing. _________________ Cool runnins,

I work at a magneto shot and we work on a few generators. I agree with the others check the regulater and the brushes. Brushes are the most common i see wrong with generators or altnators. also check the posts coming out of the top of the generator, these tend to twist the wire on the inside off, thus breaking the connection to the field coils _________________ 66 Sundail
