had a few good runs on cars...
Got my first a '94 Saturn SC-2 for the grand total of free... downside running on 3 cyls. sold for $1100 to a Saturn Mechanic after I decided I wanted a dub
Got a package deal on 3 beetles a '63,'67 and '71 super for $3k sold got the '67 rewired and running, sold it for $1200 sold the '71 for $200 after i got it cranking still have the '63.. doin a body off resto goin John Deere Blitz Black paint after I finish all the body work... goin on the cheap for now
Next up was a '72 Camaro SS clone. Bought that for $1500, used it as a shop project and did a tune up on the 400 small block, rebuilt the trans and traded the non locking 2.73 rear for a 4.10 posi. Total cost: $375 give or take.. knowledge gained: ...priceless sold it for $3k to an airforce mechanic
Decided I needed a tow vehical so I asked around and found an '87 Mitsubishi Mighty Max that had been used as a rec. association vehical. Was goin to the scrapyard with 66k miles on it. Got it for $500 and put about $150 worth of parts onto it. Sold for $950 with 70k miles on it
After I got the truck I was able to go pick up cars for myself and my friends. The only one I ended up keeping was a project '64 bug roadster for $300. After I dug into it I realised it was pretty much all bondo. Stripped it down, kept the pan and a few other parts for my '63. Started selling parts and I'm at $1200 so far.
At this point my '63 was feeling a bit lonely so I grabbed a '69 Ghia choptop full custom that I had had my eye on for awhile. Got it for $3000 along with a ton of parts. Only thing I did was put a new steering coupler on it and bumped the milage from 236 to 900 something (since resto). Just sold it for $4000.
Also picked up a '76 GMC bastard 4x4. Truck musta been made of components of 6 or 7 other trucks. 400 small block though and 4 speed plus 4x4. Alot of fun... till the throwout arm became unbolted and grenaded the trans.. wasted the engine block too. Got it for $1200 and was able to donate it to charity for a $400 tax write off.
there are a few more but I'll spare you the details, I realised this post was more me reminising than providing any relivant information.
I think another question in this thread should be how much did you spend on tools books and man hours on these cars
Gains or losses I am just happy I can do what I love!!! _________________ ‘60 SWR walk-thru Kombi

Around $1100, need new carb/many other engine parts, $500 worth.
So basically $1600 to get it on the road and running like new. Could have done it for less, but I don't live on the west coast, and bugs can be hard to come by.
Still need to get it out of the beater stage, make it look a little better. _________________ 1974 Orange Bug - Daily Driver |

$500 for my new '65. Body is off the pan, new floor pans welded in, running engine, new tires, and all glass is in. Really nice body for the northeast, just a few patches and I'm going to throw it together and drive it It also came with a complete rusty '65 parts car with lots of good parts on it. _________________ '69 Beetle, '69 Beetle Convertible |

I currently don't have my own air sucker at the moment. I can get a 71 double slider bay panel for super cheap (under $300), but it really needs some love. What do the masses say? I keep waffling... |

Timing is everything,
My 67 was $2000.00
It was a custom sunroof car, no bumpers/handles/chrome
2165 in it and an 1835 on the side (Little did I know I should have gone and looked at it since I had not seen it in 5 years)
My 64 was FREE!
It was disassenbled but it had not seen the road since 91 and was filled with lots of new stuff. Tennessee car with little rust, had not yet seen a New England winter! _________________ 67 Type I in Harley turquoise(1914CC)

1972 Super Beetle (free) dad's brother bought it new in 72 for $3200. It's sky blue with navy blue interior. Developed synchro problem in 1988 so dad parked it and it's been sitting with 93K miles for 17 years. I grew up with this car but never drove it since I turned 16 in 1996.
1973 standard Beetle ($5000)
Belonged to a doctor's wife in Texas. Has all doccuments including a build sheet in German. Car has 32K miles on it. The dealer installed DPD a/c system still works! Rubber seals arounf windows, hood and engine cover are cracking. Not a spec of rust on the whole car. Floor pans are rock solid.
So far I've invested about 20 bucks in the Muir book and a Wolfberg West print catalogue. _________________ 73 standard beetle

73 SB $300
A couple of fenders, bumpers, Centauri paint, new tires
Will be on the road in a couple of weeks
Fiberglass Manx style body with a good link pin fron end, w/vintage MOON gas pedal $50
74 Beetle $200 running, driving, rusted to the door handles, but a good donor for the dune buggy, cut the strut head off and installed a re-pro head piece for the link pin
Expected to be on the road end of May
Stainless roll bar and bumpers, blue metal flake
highback poly buckets with covers $75 pair at a swap meet
I love VW, easy to put together and cheap!

Got my first car, a '58 bug for $0. Needed engine.
The next bug a had was a '67 for $200.00. Needed a lot. Found a '74 eng for $50.00.
Bought a '60 23 wndw AND a '59 dd panel for $150.00. Gave the dd to my best bud and the dlx was stolen from behind my employer's shop. Never saw it again!
Got my present bus '65 Sundail Kombi for $65.00. Trailered it home, changed the oil, cleaned the plugs, etc. and fired it up. Grenaded 6 mos. later on the way to work. Still have the old girl.
My son's '68 for $500.00. It met its maker by way of the shredder 2 mos ago.
There's others too but these are the one's that stick out in my mind. |
