Did you wrap the oil pressure sending units threads with teflon tape?

Remove the teflon tape so that the sender will ground to the case and will actually work.

If you feel the need to put something on there, use a drop of locktite blue.

Whoa, hold on now. What distributor and carburetor are you using? The case code isn't important, your distributor part number dictates the timing. 5° retarded should only be if you have a retard hose hooked up. You are supposed to set timing with both hoses disconnected and set for max advance, then hook the hoses up to see where your timing sits. Usually when timed properly DVDA distributors sit around 5~10° advanced before the hoses are connected. The retard hose pulls the timing back when the throttle plate is closed for emissions purposes and better engine braking.

Distributer: Bosh 113 905 205 T (has vacuum hose)
Carb : 34 Pict-3

I reset the timing. not running hot now.

However, I'm still getting no oil pressure. oil level good. no leaks. I removed the oil pressure sending unit. I cranked the motor and no oil was squirting out. Need to prime the oil pump?

You need to find a distributor that works with your carb's vacuum signature.

Find out why you are not getting any oil pressure. Pump not working with your camshaft? Oil pick up tube?

Think I found the problem. I removed the cover to the oil pump. There was oil in there. Then I turned the crank. The 2 gears didn't move. Oil pump shot? Is it a simple pull & replace?

Depends on what camshaft you have.

Sounds like oil pump for a flat cam instead of dished. Pull the pump

On the right the dished cam 71 and up uses 26mm oil pump
On the left the 61-70 flat cam uses 21mm oil pump
Use the early pump late cam no oil pressure
Use the late pump early cam engine seizes you ll never get past that point .

Has happened to the best of them they look similar yes?

ah. just did a little research. I see the difference. I bought this motor as a spare for $150. I cleaned up the heads. installed new rings. new seals. I guess the previous owner installed the wrong pump. fingers crossed there's no damage

I once had a pump for straight cam used n a dished cam engine, only the pump gear got worn away, needed a replacement oil pump gear (longer type).

i guess the biggest concern is if the slot in the cam is worn away. I should be able to determine this with the oil pump out? So I need a 26mm pump (long) for the dished cam? Is there anything else I need to specifically look for so my new oil pump is correct?

Yes, you should get a good view of the cam slot with the oil pump out. And a pretty good view if you just pull out the gears and rotate the engine with a wrench.

On mine, the cam slot was fine, and the engine is still running to this day, about 25 years later.

How do I know whether to use a 26mm or 30mm oil pump for dished cams?
