I have the original 2 button radio in my car and also has the original blaupunkt speaker, is this possible to save and get restored?

it says blaupunkt on the magnet clear as day. sounds comes out of it but the foam "suspension" on the outer portion is a bit tattered

any input?

thanks in advance

You could get it "re coned" where they put a new voice coil and paper cone in it.

Lots of companies out there in the 'reconing and refoaming' business.

Look in Hemmings under "services offered".
They will have the speaker parts for AUTOMOTIVE speakers.
Most speaker re-coning shops are for home stereo or musical instrument speakers.

Buy a new speaker.................it's usually cheaper and a whole lot faster.

Do a search for speaker restoration. There are a lot of shops out there that do it. Hemmings is an okay place to look but a lot of advertisers there think that because they are in Hemmings they can charge up the wazoo for their work................

Bob,
Are you endorsing the "Wal-Mart" approach to vintage VW restoration ?
Shocked

Restoring a standard 5" oval speaker is just stupid........now if you have a 15" Wurlitzer, that's whole different animal. No one is going to see your little speaker anyway......why would you want to spend the money and take the time for no real logical reason? I would love to hear your answer on this one. Wink

WHAT?? this bob or did someone take over his log in name?

Why do people use Original bolts on restorations?
why do people go as far as replicating factory grease pin marks?

I am sure any person restoring a 356 or any other porsche would restore there speaker too if the car came with one.

one of the links that unclebob posted said they charge 45 dollars to restore a 5" speaker. thats not too bad to me and its worth it

this is one of the first things that caught my eye when i first got my car and thats the reason i want to keep it and restore it

Rolling Eyes I restore speakers too...........but not 5" oval junk.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=293475

When I judge Porsches...........I never check to see if the speakers have been re-coned. Nobody does.................It's nice if you have original speakers but no one cares or judges them. They will judge the speaker grills, the chrome, the location, the housings.....................but the speakers themselves........NEVER. If you want to pay the price for inferior sound at best.....weeks of waiting and fustrations, be my guest. Stupid money, in my opinion. Wink

Speakers are a non-issue for me.
I prefer to listen to the sweet exhaust note of my cars. Very Happy

Everyone can see your 25hp fuel pump, yet you use a hidden electrical one.
Out of sight, out of mind ?
Cool
P.S. I would restore the original one without hesitation !

Many old radios with tube amps require a speaker with a higher ohm rating. 8, 16, even 32 Ohm was common in the days of tube amps. Using a modern speaker can burn out some tube amps because most modern speakers are either 4 or 8 ohms. The lower the ohm rating the harder the amp has to work to drive the speaker.

Personally I would never ask a car radio with tubes to try to drive a 4 ohm speaker because that puts a load on the radio that it was never designed to handle, and the last time I looked at the cheap speakers at Autozone they were all 4ohm.

You asked. Very Happy

The 25hp one still works.............In fact, I forgot to turn the electric one on last show and drove home (130 miles) with it off.

Sorry Coad................The "new" speaker in my Blaupunkt is 8 ohms and it has no problems whatever. Most all Blaupunkt car speakers were 8 ohmes and those can be bought almost anywhere. I got mine at Radio Shack for $10. Wink
