I've been cleaning my rusty fuel tank and made sure that the tank was turned and shaken regularly.
I did the following:
1. HCL soak overnight. Tank very clean.
2. Several water washes.
3. Marine prep soak for 4 days. Tank not so clean.
4. Several water washes.
5. HCL soak overnight. Tank is spotless.
6. Several water washes.
7. Metal Ready overnight.
8. Hot water washes. Tank has now a mottled finish.
9. Dried tank with hot air gun
Tank
Filtered the Metal Ready and got 2 coffee filters full of grey sludge.
I've never before used Metal Ready, is this what normally happens?

Welcome,
I wouldn't say it's abnormal, every tank has a different amount of crud in it and solution strength, temperature and time in use differes between users and jobs. If the end result is a clean tank with a slightly grey finish you've done good, a rinse with a little mineral spirits or gasoline just to get the last of the dusty stuff out wouldn't hurt and finish up with a bit of ATF just to prevent flash rust while it's waiting to be used. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here
