Yes that’s true. I’m simply suggesting that back in the day, as new cars, they would have needed a permit to be on the road without a conversion. To me it is plausible that in more recent times it has been brought to SA by a collector or restorer as a historic vehicle forgoing some compliances and permitting it to be on the road…. but the reflectors, which I’ve only seen on SA cars, might be mandated.
Maybe Chris knows that landscape better and can be more factual.

I owned at least a dozens cars - not all at the same time!!! - in South Africa and not one of them had those reflectors. I can see no purpose in having those. Anyway, in South Africa the number plate on the front would have had to be above the bumper. I know that very well because I was stopped by a traffic cop who made me refit the plates on my Alfa Spider above the bumper. Very embarrassing, in a suit and tie on a hot summer's day, removing and refitting the number plate on the side of the highway in 5-o'clock traffic, with a man with a gun on his hip standing over me. And yes, I was seen, by many, including some of the mothers from my son's school taking their precious boys and girls home.

It has those added reflectors that seem to be mandated by the South African Authorities supporting the story that it came from South Africa. however, South Africa is left hand traffic and the car shows the steering on the opposite side for that. I suspect the car transited South Africa from elsewhere before arriving in the UK.

As far as I know, there were no factory RHD Lowlights. |
Saw this just the other day…
So RHD for the 1960 model year.
That 59 goes up for sale on Monday. I’ve been trying to work out how I could justify buying it / actually buy it remotely and ship, and it just doesn’t work.
Will be watching anyway. |

Logistically importing/exporting to/from the US or anywhere else is simple. You pay the shipping company, they do the paperwork and deliver the car. If it's an auction you just have to work out how much you can afford to bid and stop if it reaches that amount.
It is however easier if its a set asking price. _________________ John.

Wow!!!
Expect that to turn up again soon with an extra £20k added to the price!
Weirdly talking about importing cars, just before Covid, I stole a great British car from the fair isle and brought it to the US under the 25 year rule (a Caterham 7).
It was made easier, in that my uncle helped store it and take it to the dock. It was a big thing for him, so wouldn’t have wanted to do that again. Then at £16k it would have been VERY worth while! |

Yep that lowlight was billed to sell by auction but didn't make it that far. It is a car that's local to me. I have heard it rumoured it had rust in the rockers and a cheap respray so the owner accepted an in-person offer before it went to auction.
I imported a '63 15 window bus from Brazil in 2004 without any drama and my Lowlight came from the US was simplicity itself. _________________ John.

Rare indeed.
Maybe there’s hope for my ‘70 after all, though I don’t have the fancy door emblems. _________________ Volkswagen!

I hope those badges aren't bolted on.
The engine tin is a bit iffy plus the engine appears to be on a slight angle.
Frame horns bent?
Is that $25k US dollars?? _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

Its so crappy especially with those BIG House of Ghia door emblems......not one thing ORIGINAL to that VW and he has the nads enough to be asking $25,000. Why is this a VERY RARE HARDTOP model? |
