I built the adaptor and mounting bar myself, I'll post some photos
I wanted to make my own adaptor plate myself so I could lay the
engine over at the angle I needed to clear the engine lid. the hardest
part of the mc install was the flywheel. the stock 5 cylinder flywheel
is to big in diameter to fit in the vanagon bell housing, and the vanagon
flywheel won't bolt up to the 5 cylinder crankshaft. I got an audi 4000q
flywheel and had it machined to spec. I used the 4000q pressure plate,
and a vanagon clutch disc to match up with the vanagon input shaft.
also I used the stock syncro starter instead of the audi starter, I had
to machine the flywheel so I could put the starter ring gear, off the
vanagon flywheel, on the other side of it, because the audi starter
is on the engine side, not the tranny side. |

I have a quantum engine thats a match for this app. Can you fill me in on the specs of your plate and bars? _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

3B is in! it actually fits better than the old MC engine, way more room in
the engine compartment without the CIS fuel distributor and fuel lines.
Also, I was able to move the intercooler to a more efficient location.
I'm so excited at the thought of 250 Lbs of torque,(with stock boost
levels), I'm almost giddy. I'll post some pics soon. |

VERRY nice engine there MC syncro..
soo why was the 167~hp 5cyl turbo too little HP?
and yes, not just to quench BillW's thirst to get his quantum 5cyl off his garage floor, but to ease my own curiosity, when you have the engine back out to fit..
please provide us some images of the adapter, as I'm still planning on DIY my own and putting this 5000 turbo engine into my own syncro project.
actually a nicely traced (posterboard) outline and bolt holes would be quite helpful.
keep us (me) updated on this 3b upgrade, I have a few 5000CS in the family, but searching for some 3b's wouldn't be unreasonable.

Man, that's cool. Good job!!!!!
So is the engine attached to the original engine cradle along with the new cradle or is the original cradle simply in place to hold the skid plate? _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

mcsyncro, I'm very curious about what your doing. I have installed every form of 5 cylinder in Vanagons except the one you doing right now. For obvious reasons I just have to know how you end up running the charged air to the intake side.??
At the moment I have a nomally aspirated 20v 5cyl in a syncro which I have been happily driving for about three years now. No issues and I love it ,short of the "no power under about 3000 rpm" issue. At any rate I am currently looking for a 3B. Becoming a hard bird to find these days as you probably know.
anyway CHEERS! for your effort and to be quite frank, I am supprised you pulled the 10v turbo out. It was such a clean install!! it looked so pretty with the red paint.
Good luck and thanks for all the photos!!

Why the 7A manifold? I suppose the longer runners are a cool idea +hp, but it moves the throttle body way over?
Oh man I am stoked at what your doing.
More......please

"Why the 7A manifold? I suppose the longer runners are a cool idea +hp, but it moves the throttle body way over?"
The stock 3b intake manifold was no way fitting under the engine lid.
it is way too tall, and about 3" too long, the 7a should give me some
more torque (maybe), but the good thing is, the throttle body lines
up perfectly with the stock throttle cable and the innercooler outlet.
what a bitch it was to get it at the correct angle and height though.
plus, I had to cut and reweld the water manifold so the intake
wouldn't hit it. should at least hear it run this weekend I hope! |
