Well here is my so called "Barn" find. I found this 58 Beetle on Craigslist here in Vegas. The Bug was in Kingman Az when I found it. The story goes that the Bug is from New York and was sold new at Stateside Imports in Jamestown New York. The owner came to Las Vegas in mid 1966, and apparently lost his shirt and had to sell the Bug to get home? The Bug was bought by a lady named Ruth who owned the Bug till 1983. The next owner was a VW mechanic and he apparently just parked the Bug, never registered it and covered it up? He sold it to a Guy in Kingman AZ, and I bought it from him. The Bug is in fantastic condition, no rot, no accidents all original with the exception of the front and rear seats? The fact the Bug came from the desert area makes for a clean rot free Bug, albeit they get sandblasted! This is the Bug I always wanted to find, a rot free unmolested early VW Bug. The funny thing is, it was posted on Samba with no interest? My plans are to restore the Bug as it looked out of the factory January 1958!!

Nothing in particular. I am thinking of getting back into old Indian motorcycles again. I have my eye on an original paint 4 cylinder bike that I have been stalking a guy about for years - I almost got him there.
Don't really need to sell it or anything, but I don't drive it like I used to. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"

Not the barn/shed that it had been in but where it was the first time I laid eyes on my Oct. 53 Oval.

These are my "Barn Finds" a 1961 Beetle all original with only 64,000 miles on her. She is a Vermont native and completely solid. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw her. When I looked underneath, I found a floor. Even the battery tray was solid. My first intentions when I was looking for a new project was to do a full restoration but this girl will not be touched. She will stay original with lovely patina eyes. She came from Champlain Volkswagen in northern VT and purchase by a couple who only drove her in the summer and kept her in a barn. After many years the Volkswagen dealership dissolved and the owner of the dealership opened up his own little Volkswagen repair shop in VT. He bought the Beetle back from the original owners and kept her at the shop with a for sale sign on her. The lady that I bought it from, a super nice librarian and technology teacher in her early 60's bought it from the VW shop and used it as her daily driver in the summer time.
Ok, here's the kicker, she decided to sell it because she had purchased a VW R32 Gti all-wheeled drive beast. She purchased the R32 so she can ralley it up in Canada on the frozen lakes. I could not believe it until I saw her ralley wheels with super aggressive Hakkapelittas tires. She showed me pictures of all the cars she has ever owned, practically every VW ever made and lots of British cars too. Well here are some pictures when I got her. Oh yeah, I drove it home with a full year insurance and registration under her name. She told me to use up the insurance and you won't believe what I paid for her.
Also, pictures on my latest find, a 57 Kombi I just picked up for $750.
Driving her home.

That car was in a shed out on a farm in Little Mountain with a bunch of American cars and a '58 euro rag-turned-baja (now owned by the imfamous Alan Willis). We also got a '64 ghia vert from under an overhang next to another shed, and a '64 beetle with dual rear wheels (6 wheels total!). Strangely enough, the nicest condition car, stored in a closed shed next to some ancient plymouth or something, was a completely original '71 super beetle! We left it in the shed...
Got this bus from the same place, but it was in the woods, sunken into the ground. It didn't fair as well...

Hey Gregg,
You should have taken a pic of the Oval where it sat. I will post the whole story of the car in a few weeks. It has a real interesting story to tell. _________________ 58 Coral Red ragtop(Diana's car)

I look forward to reading it. I wish I had taken my camera, It was a really cool place, lots of neat stuff. Cars and parts everywhere, poking out of the pine straw and leaves, returning to the earth.
We looked all over for those seat backs. Can't imagine where they got off to or why someone would remove them. |

Well, the story on this one is an interesting one. I just purchased this less than a month ago. I bought it from a Samba member in VT. He purchased the car from a guy who had old VWs and old Land Rover trucks. The Bus was used as an Ice Shanty for ice fishing. It actually has a small cut out section in the floor so you can fish in it. It also got a slight hit on the driver side. Not sure how but very fixable. He was asking $750 for the bus but I wasn't sure about buying it because I knew I would need some body parts for repair. Well, guess what was inside the bus. How about I just show you the pictures and you'll see what I am talking about.
And all the body parts needed inside the bus!
