Its been a long time since I got any work done, but here are some pics of my progress. I started to strip and hydroblast the shell yesterday. The hydroblasting works great in tough or irregularly shaped spots but I found that it was cheaper for me to use a grinder with an 80 grit disc for the easier and larger panels. I'll probably still hydroblast them too so they have that nice surface, but it'll use less sand this way. As long as I am carefull with the 80 grit I shouldnt have any warping problems.
And here is the reason work hasnt been done in a while-
Unfortunately thats not me driving, its my 8yr old son. Its a money pit but he loves it and it keeps him out of trouble.

The bad part about that kart is that I couldnt drive it if I wanted to. The Chassis' are the same for kids vs. adults, but theres no way I could fit into the seat. Besides that, these karts are balanced. We scale it regularly with four corner scales, driver with gear, fuel full, to make chassis changes. We alter front vs rear weight, left vs. right weight, and cross weight. For a vehicle with no suspension, its VERY complicated.
On an 1/8 mile clay oval track, he runs it up to about 42mph, wide open all the way around. _________________ Link to my build thread- Updated 6-6-07 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210613

I am very interested in your pressure blasting success. Any tips or help would be appriciated. How much sand did you use? The car looks great!
BTW, how on earth do you keep the thing from rusting in florida with the car bare metal? _________________ '70 Deluxe

Sorry, but there hasnt been much happening to my bug lately.
My sons kart racing has taken alot of my time and budget, and I am starting a new business making vinyl decals, signs and graphics. The website is up but isnt much to look at yet- AllOutDecals.com
Anyway, I didnt hydroblast everything, only the tough to get to spots. I used about three or four 50 lb bags, but I cant easily say how many square feet I did. It did seem to use less sand than my old pressure blaster. Probalby because the water is doing some of the work.
As for keeping the car from rusting- thats Ospho. Ospho is a brand name for a deruster that contains phosphoric acid. I either spray it on a rag, or on the car itself with an old spray bottle, let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it dry with a clean rag. If you let it dry, it forms a blackened crud type coating that probably derusts but wouldnt be good to paint over. It will derust fairly hevay rust on metal if given enough time. I put some in a bucket with a lid, and threw in some bolts and washers. After a week, the washers were paper thin! but totally clean!
You can buy Clean Strip brand phosphoric acid at Home Depot for about $12 a quart or $25 per gallon. Its usually a green liquid.[/url] _________________ Link to my build thread- Updated 6-6-07 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210613

Cool! Thanks for doing that and posting it up.
I got some more done to my project over the last few days but its nothing that's worth photos.
I finished welding in both pan halves and almost have the firewall rust repair all finished.
Still on the agenda;
-Weld in the old latch areas on the passenger side B-pillar.
-Weld up a few holes on the rear firewall.
-Install rear apron.
-Get a new hood, then make sure it fits.
-Repair small section of pan head, then blast and paint pan.
That should be enough to keep me going for a while. _________________ Link to my build thread- Updated 6-6-07 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210613
