I bought the KGPR set and a set of the KGPR clips . I tossed out the original clips that were on the car - so no mixing and matching (even though they looked identical). The trim went on nicely and there are no bulges.

In area where there was the added thickness of filler, I used a 3M adhesive to glue the clip into the hole.

I think I'm going to go with the KGPR pieces.

Here's a couple more shots:

What is the installation procedure:
1. Install the clips into the body, then slide the moulding over it
2. Insert clips into moulding and position to snap in.

It seems you would have to install clips into body, then carefully slide moulding on. Can someone please confirm for me.

Thanks,

#2 is the correct way, clips in the moulding then snap onto body.

The only exception would be the original trim with metal clips - with those, you have to install the clips into the trim first, then the trim onto the car.

Oops, I was thinking of another style. If they are the plastic clips, then they go on the body first, then the trim snaps on.

If using the plastic clips with the thin aluminum trim try to sand or file down the clips some or they will leave dents in the trim.

I am confused that is the same way lonotch suggested. BTW, I have aftermarket trim and plastic clips. The only way I can insert the plastic clips into the trim is to push the pins in about 1/2 way then slide them on. Then they seem to be expanded too much to insert into the holes in the body. Sorry to be a pest, but I already put a small scratch in my new paint. Sad

Thanks for the clarification.

When the bodwork was done on your car primer and paint has made the hole smaller, you might need to get a file and open the holes up some to install the clips as not to put a dent in the body, but before you press the plastic clip in you should repaint the hole so the metal doesn't rust. Clip first, then press on trim, but like I said, try to file the ends some first or they will put dents in the trim.

How robust are the ISP pieces? I have the KGPR set, and they look good, but are very easy to ding.

*Bump*

Since this is the official thread that gets recommended when searching for side trim, I would like to see more photos of said trim mounted on cars. Seems that people still ask a lot of questions regarding what to buy, stainless or aluminum? Which is better? People are buying it right? Let's see it...

Nice angles that clearly show off your trim and a description of what brand you have would help.

I have not made my purchase yet since I'm a ways off from that point, but I still haven't made my decision on which set to buy. The KGPR stuff looks a lot more original, but not as durable. The ISP stuff has a very nice shine, but the width looks to be a little too much. Seems the ISP trim would compliment a ghia with chromed wheels better?

Well from Thom's investigations as you say, the KGPR trim looks more like the original. As for more durable I'm not sure, once it's fitted how much wear and tear do you expect it to take in a Californian climate?

My '58 runs the og trim...never been changed so apart from the chances of a side impact they don't get knocked about a lot.

If Thom went along with the results of his investigations I think the KGPR trim looks pretty good vvvvv

I've got the KGPR trim (and clips) on my car and it looks and fits great. I didn't realize there was a difference in the tips until now, I'll have to study them with a magnifying glass on my knees......
