Where did you get the EL paper? I've seen it sold in various places but its always been extremely expensive per square inch.

Very Slick, very slick indeed! I see that this is quite an old post, but did you ever figure out a kit? I would buy one.

Nice thing about that EL roil is that the electricity goes from front to back, so you can cut it in any shape you like...

Hey guys

Once and a while I get a PM about this mod so I figured I might as well give an update. Here's what I wrote back to 1991VanagonCarat.

I have worked on it a bit recently but I've been so busy with work that I really haven't done much. I've refined the gauge face and streamlined the EL stencils. But I don't want to producing the kit until I have it all 100% worked out. I'm shooting for more or less of a "plug and play kit"

There's nothing more annoying than spending a day pulling things apart and putting them back together only to have to do it again a week later due to some dumb oversight ya know. My prototype set was good for about 3-4 months but burned out due to a malfunction in the 12v inverter that powers the EL material. I later learned that the amount of EL material used must coincide with the inverters power rating. I've since upgraded to a better quality, better suitable inverter, but haven't had a chance to install it in my dash yet. I may have a chance to install it this weekend. I'd like to do a good 5-6 month trial run on this set before I consider putting them on the market.

Peace

Dubs

What do you guys think?

Well, only since you asked, I don't think this type of gauge illumination is sympathetic with the vintage and the design of a Vanagon. It's like "Pimp My Ride" on a minor scale.

16 to 1...I can live with that. The intent was not to pimp but to improve the visibility of the gauges. God I can't stand that show. How dare you Laughing Rolling Eyes

Hey, who ever looks at any of the Vanagon's guages anyway except for the temp gauge and all you have to know about that is which side of the LED the needle is riding.

How did you get the needles to light up??

I have installed some EL gauge faces to my original T3 cluster but it's damn hard to see where the needles are at night..

I AM IN TOO! Please add me to the list of potential buyers.

I have never liked the stock gauge illumination and this is just what I have been wanting. Nice work!

Any idea of the approximate cost? Can you do a custom tach face that goes to 7,000 RPM's for a Subaru conversion?

About halfway through the video a huge gust of wind picked up a metal construction fence across the street from our apartment and through it about 40 feet down the middle of the street Shocked Scared the #$%^ out of my wife. You cant really see it but you can sure hear it.

Sorry, no updates on the gauges Confused Rolling Eyes The wife and I have packed up and moved to Taiwan (hence the typhoon video). That said, my precious Lola is sitting in my parents back yard till January...ish, along with all my tools and stuff. So the project has unfortunately been put back on the shelf for the time being. Sorry for dangling a big juicy steak in front of you guys. Its going to be a while.

Here's the video if anybody else wants to see it.
