Replacement inner lights are "not available", however I have some inner lights from an early VW cabriolet and the lights could be made to fit on the SA brackets.

Now I have a real problem...the inner lamps have nothing to tell me if it's a left or a right lamp. No Links, no L, no Recht, no R stamped on them any where. Do I figure them out by how they are pointing?

Nope not universal, look at the lens, obviosly you want the writing right side up, now look at the bracket, holding the bracket to the body is goint to point the light more or less straight, if you hold the right light on the left side the light will be aimed to the left.

Yeah...I think I got 'em right.

Unfortunately....never wear long hair near a rapidily spinning object....say...like a drill. Jeez....I couldn't figure out what knocked me in the head and sent me flying on my keester. Hope I haven't broken my head. My hair's a mess, now I need a hair cut....and with only one more light to go...damn. And I need a new drill....good thing I have spares.

I shoulda had my mechanic do the upgrade...the German steel is tough or I just have crappy bits.

OW! My head hurts!

Don't feel too bad. I squashed a finger last fall when I changed out my engine. The finger nail is just now finished growing out. If you aren't wearing a couple of band-aids, you aren't trying hard enough! Very Happy Just make sure you take your time with power tools Shocked

fyrgrrl,

I feel your pain. You doing it! Van will like you. You gave blood to it.

Call it your own Red Cross Blood bank. More is required to keep the Van running! Laughter makes it run too. Lots of laughter and good times!

Nice job.

Well....I was working too hard yesterday. Dull bits just couldn't do it. So I attacked it again today with a different drill and brand new bits. What a difference!!! So anyway....I will hopefully get it all wrapped this weekend. But before I snap that lovely SA grill on, I am slapping "xPel" glass protectors on every lens so I don't lose any of 'em to the ubiquitous rocks on Washington state highways.

I'll put pics up when I am done....including the hairy drill!!!

Oh...and BTW....the grill was tougher to take off the '85 'cos it snapped into all four of the metal "springs" in the light buckets. I see that the buckets I got from Van-Cafe only have one per bucket instead of two.

Thanks for all the nice thoughts and encouragement. It does help ease the goose-egg on my head.

What to do about all those wire bundles??? Makes for a very tight fit behind the lamp.

The hairy side of an upgrade:

Hope to get this done soon...I have another 1987 to upgrade!!!

For the wire loom I just zip-tied it down to the other loom under the light. I also carefully raised the speedometer cable above the light when it was installed. I just did this conversion again on one of my vans this week- it has worked well on my other vans for a few years.

OK....got the VW snapped in ok without breaking anything or gouging the grill...PHEW!!!

Here's a pic of the lights all installed. So....did I get the inner lights installed right?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And VOILA!!! I am done....well...I guess I should aim them before blinding people on the highway.

I didn't get the driver's inner light installed correctly. It will be tough to get to the screw to adjust the light. Oh well....but I feel pretty good about the whole thing.

I had problems getting both the black and chrome emblems into the hole. I seem to remember prying on the tab while applying lots of force on other side to push it it. I think all of my loud swearing really helped to get it in nicely.

Bravo! Applause I've been holding my breath for you throughout!

btw... I know your drill-in-hair pain. I learned the same lesson loosing a hank of long hair in a snowmobile engine when I was 15.

HAHA, fyrgrrl you live about 5 miles from me!!!. I'm back off Arnold near Penn Cove. I recognize your driveway since I ride my roadbike by there all the time and oogle the vans out there. Wanamaker Road or something by FT Casey. My van has a bomber H4/relay conversion and I could/ve helped in hindsight, but looks like you got it - great job. You'll love it during the winter when it is perpetually dark.

Uh....uh.....why, yes....that's me out there on Wanamaker....so much for my invisible internet cloak.

And yeah...who woulda thought I would be wishing for winter so early in summer? But it does give me some time to get those lights adjusted.

If ya see me out there with those vans whilst on your bike, stop by! Who knows...I might have another van or bus soon for you to ogle!
