| There were photos of that bus in Ultra VW a few months back, if i am not mistaken and it has a large amount of wood flooring and wood in the bottoms of the engine compartment. |

I think it is cool as shit. There were only 12, or 13 left. So that would make it one of the rares coach builts in the world. There is alot of wood in the sub floor, but that one is mostly in tacked. Ugly as it is it still is cool a hell. and i agree, slam it and put on some fuchs.  |

I think these are amazing. Often its East Germany's attempt to emulate the offerings of the west, utilising whatever limited resources they had at the time As a piece of History, I think they are quite significant.
Damn ugly though!!!!  |

That thing is UGLY regardless !!!!!!! Oi, your a Taffey?? Wales?? Wales is a very beautiful country. East Germany is bad ass too!!!

Evenin'!  Been on it again tonight, 2 more outriggers on, and painted the rims. Back on it again Saturday sometime now. The '55 is having a beam built tomorrow too. Not going to be as wide as it was originally....  |

I'm just curious, is this the same size as a regular bus or a scaled down version? The bus that Bob Shail wrote about is a '56 and this one is a '53?

Here is more info about these busses:
Beside that these are RARE as shit... that's beacose only 25 where made in '53 - '54, these are East-German busses that where build with the permission of VW!
They where used as taxi-busses over there in the poverty days just after World-War II.
The chassis are made out of wood  but it has several VW parts on it like the engine, front axle, the dash and others... besides that they had to be build by the splitbus (barndoor) concept/looks.
There are only 5 know left... and this one still is a driver (see picture below).
They are and look strange but if you are a collector I would grab one

Everett reposted this in the vintage barndoor photos thread. I asked a question, which I'll repeat here:
I understand that most of the East German ersatz buses used military kubel and schwimmer chassis to construct. Did the Germans have a supply of new vehicles or parts from unused war inventory to use to make these buses? Seems like there are too many of them around to have just used random used military vehicles to build these.
Anybody know?

this is just a half satisfying answer possibly. but f.i. Austrian coachbuilder Kohlruss and others were literally building dozens of converted Kübelz and KDF converted Steyr 50 Babies and special vehicles, just from war surplus ( ie wrecked or seized Wehrmacht cars). after WW2 there were huge wrecking and salvage yards all over Europe. Pfeiffhofer told me in person how there was a huge Wehrmacht wrecking yard close to (Porsches new home) Gmünd, where even Porsche themselves used to get their parts. I can imagine that after all that happend in the last days of WW2 in Eastern Germany and associated territories, there must have been thousands of abandoned vehicles even years later.
imho they need to be respected for what they are. I personally own an ex GDR split beetle ( while later YOM), that has been modified and what needed done to keep them running. hats off to those ingenious mechanics east of the border!

This sounds like a reasonable explanation. The amount of wasted hardware after the war was just amazing.
