Maybe check out the "Avons" mentioned in that thread.

US $83/each would be cheap. They are much more now.

If you want a tire cheaper than $83 you might want to look into recaps

Be carefull what you pay for, I have seen the firestone that coker make under licence and they were horrible, realy small contact patch, and bad tire wear from what I heard.
Here in the uk the Avons come out of the OG molds and are awsome, I run them on my bus and it feels like driving on radials.
They do run like $180 each though.

Very Happy

Adding this post here so it can be found more easily with the search function, a new option for 5.50-16 Radials. Link here for current discussion
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=735603

I just ordered 5 of these. Michelin X TT 5.50R16. Reproduction of the earliest Radials offered since 1949 by Michelin. Offered by OEM manufacturer Michelin

https://classic.michelin.com/en/Classic-Tyre-range/X

https://www.ebay.com/itm/402858559193?hash=item5dcc3dc6d9:g:NjUAAOSw6V5gyHic
I got them from jegs off ebay, $222 each w/ free shipping. Also, most bias plies are no longer in stock because of the everything shortage.

I prefer the factory sized 5.50 tires to the 6.00's most are running. These have "the look" IMO, though the pie crust is not as obvious as a firestone. Load index 88, so they are 1235#, higher than any 5.50 bias ply and about 50% more than the equivalent firestone

I'm excited to try them out.

From the michelin website.
"The radial tyre was the first major innovation from Michelin and was initially marketed as the “X” tyre in 1949.
Lancia was the first car manufacturer to fit the X tyre as original equipment on the Aurelia model.
From 1955 onwards, radial technology became increasingly popular and the majority of European car manufacturers opted for this solution.
The X could be fitted to cars of very different categories, from the original and popular 2CV or Beetle to the fascinating Mercedes 190SL or Facel Vega

Radial technology
The benefits of the radial tyre compared with the standard tyre were visible in all areas:
- greater safety: clearly improved road-holding, grip, braking.
- economical to use: double the mileage, significantly reduced fuel consumption.
- increased comfort thanks to sidewall flexibility.
In the 1950s, the superiority of the X tyre was such that a number of racing drivers adopted it, although Michelin was not officially involved in car racing."

Please post your results with these tires. They do look very promising and would be kind of period correct.

I have been running Michelin X 5.50 R16 for a few years. I've been happy with them.

Looking for some 550x16 tires. The bus will get about 1000km per year and max speed of 80kph. Want them to look period correct.

After some quick searching I found 4 choices. Was originally thinking Firestone but quite a low weight rating. The Avon look nice and see good things about them. The Excelsior are cheap and have good weight rating. Also found radials but don't really want them.

Any opinions on these or others available in North America? Actuality I am not sure shipping from Europe would be much higher than from US to Canada. I may find a Canadian source for tires but likely more expensive than shipping from US.

Excelsior | All Black | 550-16 ($169usd)
1047lb

550-16 Firestone Blackwall ($204usd)
840lb

550-16 Avon HM Tourist Blackwall ($253usd)
993lb

550R16 Coker Blackwall Radial replacement for 550-16 bias ply ($285usd)

i would be between the Excelsior bias plies if i didn't really drive it, or the radials. They are really the only ones with the proper load rating.

the excelsiors are cheaper than the Avons by a lot. for avon money i would take the radials.

Those look really good, and they have international distributors. But with shipping, you're looking at like $1100 in the US for a set of four, $1350-odd with the spare. Gotta really think before making a choice, it's getting 'spensive!
