Everyday is a school day for us......I recently learned some things about the Flying VW Mascots, and I now no longer think they originated from Australia originally, although Australia did mass market them. I now think Australia was the first to reproduce them......
There is evidence that they existed in Europe prior to the Australian ones being made.I have found evidence of 2 versions from Europe, but I think these were made in very small batch numbers, maybe even only 1 or 2, as there is not much evidence of them existing in Europe.
The earliest info from Australia that I have on these, is from 1958. I recently acquired a version that a guy bought at a swap meet in Germany 30+ years ago, and it was an old weathered piece back then. I have found this in a picture in a 1956 Gute Fahrt magazine. It was more like a universal mascot, that you change the insert to suit various cars. It looks too intricate to be homemade...... There is also another picture of the version with the rocket on top, in a 1952 Gute Fahrt magazine. Now, VW did not come to Australia until late 1953.......So, they came from Europe somewhere first, then the Australians copied/reproduced them.......
The pic from the magazine below, is from 1952.....
Sorry if I am boring you with details, but I think it is time to correct/re-write the history books on this topic.

Looking at the others, I guess it’s a reproduction as well. It was listed on EBay as very rare . Cheers.

Without seeing yours in the flesh, it cannot be confirmed as real or fake, but, I would lean to it being real from the pics you posted. It looks like it has been re-chromed, but an original.
Here are some detailed pics of an original, the same version as yours, for comparison.
This is only sitting on the bonnet, not bolted down.

I saw this thread popped back up again.
I'll take the real or fake challenge.

There have been a ton of these popping up on EBay lately. I suspect they are all fakes. Many being sold by people who are also selling antique related items. Who the heck is making these things and flooding the market? _________________ 1951 Crotch Cooler Split Ragtop

Fakes....
Fake on the left, original on the right
Original on the left, fake on the right
Original on the bottom, fake on the top
Fake. Cast in 2 parts. The rocket on the top is welded/soldered on to the bottom part.

How about this one? I dont have any reference to what an OG one looks like. The old links to pictures don't work.
