|

My '55 never had a exterior side mirror. My question is how to extract the hinge stud without damage to car. What are the current types of mirror I should consider. |

Mounting a set of Albert Swan neck mirrors will do away with the need for hinge pins.
But if you want mirrors at the hinge, you'll need to drive the current pin out with an impact hammer or a mini sledge (atleast a 10lb model)
I'd recommend soaking the hinge area with some PB Blaster or Kroil to help loosen the pin. When you open the door, there's a lubricating point in the hinge that often goes ignored. Spray some lubricant in there. Lubricate a few times per day for 3-5 days.

Understand that no matter how careful you are the odds are you'll screw your paint doing it. |

Tape some cardboard to the door to protect it the best you can, maybe an old towel for cushion as well. |

Those are a pain in the ass.... Use a hammer and a steel punch. |

Wolfburg West has an excellent "how to" article on how to remove and reinstall hinge pins on VW doors. They also sell the pins and the reamer that you will need to do the job correctly. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

I first taped a shop rag to the door below the hinge to protect the paint. Then I taped a sheet of steel over top of the cloth. Hammer away, you won't ding the door panel. It is best to support the hinge so that the hinge itself does not take all the impact. If you hit it too hard, you can actually move the hinge relative to the door. _________________

That's great. Is that tool still available off the shelf somewhere? |
I found mine at an old VW dealership.
If someone repopped these I think they will sell heaps of them.
I have seen 2 versions of them. The one pictured is a casting, and another that is fabricated from several pieces and welded together. |

Here's mine:
If you have the right bit, taking the doors off is a breeze. This allows you to flip it upside down, prop the hinge on the edge of a surface and drive the pin down.
If you have air, these impact guns are not expensive. The only way to do it IMO.
See the "Doors" article at my website thebugshop.org for more info on hinge pins. _________________ John Henry

A lot of door pins are not gonna be moved by an air hammer. We have a middle of the range quality air hammer and 130 psi behind it. Soaked in Kroil for two weeks and also used heat. It just laughed at the air hammer but I was not laughing. |

I had a few that "laughed" at my cheesy dept store brand impact hammer... that is why I bought the I-R one pictured above. Thus far it is 44-0. I have yet to find anything it wouldn't budge (with no heat or oil). It has mushroomed a few drift pin tims, but never failed to drive a pin out.
If an impact hammer like that isn't going to budge a pin, I can assure you neither VW svc. tool nor sledge will either.... _________________ John Henry

I also have an IR Impact hammer and the hinge pin I have is starting to laugh. Let's see it laugh to the 25 ton Dake hydraulic press I'm using this afternoon!

What are the thoughts of drilling out a couple of very stubborn pins?
As for using heat THEN hammering out with a punch just how much heat is required, the paint doesn't matter the original is already gone.
Thanks, and apologies for dragging up an old thread... _________________ 1956 RHD Oval.
