I've been re-reading Chris Barber's book on the development of the Beetle, and this pic illustrates so well the brilliance of the idea of using a flat piece of flexible metal as the trailing arm for the rear suspension. It saved so much material and money and works so simply. A perfect example of effective engineering.

There is a lot of confusion about the photo of the 1,000th Beetle. The photo says it's the 1,000th Volkswagen built during March, 1946. It's not the 1,000th postwar Volkswagen. It is in fact the one-thousandth Volkswagen built during March of 1946! March was the first thousand-car month!

Here (sorry its hard to see) is a picture of a 1946 beetle in the book How to HOTROD VOLKSWAGEN ENGINES..It too appears to have the little headlights.
