What is the correct cargo door bezel for the SO42 Camper?
Is it a metal one like the one below? even though the handle is plastic?

that is an inner cargo door bezel for the 60 1/2 - 67 buses.
It goes with the later inner handles, for the earlier inner handles the bezel is a differnt shape.
It is used on deluxes with inner chrome handles, and the standard micros with the plastic inner handles.
panels? kombis? hm... maybe not... westies? I think so.
note that the front door inner handle bezel is plastic, even for the buses with chrome inner handles there. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

On my 67 SO-42 that buffer is silver white plastic, as is the handle. |

sounds like you have a front door handle escutcheon there. pic? _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

I will need to dig through my parts boxes. That part has been off the bus for a while.
I'll try to look tonight if I have time. |

Thanks for the responses. I thought that the plastic front door bezels would fit too. I just wasn't sure what was "correct".
Can anyone else with an original SO42 camper check to see what they have?
Thanks! |

Update:
I had my head up my ass.
There was no escutcheon/bezel on my bus. I sent a PM to TimB, whose 67 is also super original, and there was none on his bus either.
I looked at the original photos of our bus when it was new and the picture is not clear enough for me to be able to tell.
It looks like I need that part. |

My bus never had those either. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

I have a chrome one and a missing one. Not much help, huh? Now I'm curious about what should be there. |

I think they're only supposed to be on the rear door, not the front one. Am I on dope?
SO L42Y, which of your doors has the bezel? |

My bus still had the og panels in when I got it and it didn't have the bezel on either door. Keep in mind my bus isn't as original as some of yours. |

Looks like a beaver was chewing on those screwheads!!
Thanks for the photo.
There doesn't look like there's enough room for a bezel on the forward door (depth-wise). Is there?
I am tempted to just leave them off until I come across one for cheap. |

It makes some sense, I guess, that the bezel is paired to the wooden panel and not with the metal. The metal latch on the fore cargo door does not show any signs that there ever was anything else there; but that boogered screwhead suggests that something could have been changed or added, so I am not convinced that it is an original deal.
Not beavers maybe, but cows perhaps; the original owner said that after a month of camping on the beach (Salter Path, NC, no less) she camped on the Little Tennessee River in the Smokies when a herd of cows woke her up licking off the salt on the bus. That's a great one to hear.
I, with hesitation, confess that I bungee that forward door open with that bezel-less handle.

There is room on the front cargo door for one. But, it seems like the jury is still out on whether or not it should have one there. |

I got a pair of those little chrome trim rings from Everett. What is supposed to go behind them to keep them from rattling? The backs have some sort of adhesive residue on them, suggesting that perhaps the factory glued a hunk of foam on there to keep them snug up against the back of the door handle lever. |

I used a sheet of foam padding with a peel back sticky stuff on one side. It worked perfectly. I have a bunch of it. PM if you need some. |

I have some 3/8 neoprene type stuff. It seems too dense for the thickness. What did you use? |

Sounds like the same kind of stuff. It's stuff I used to outfit a kayak. |
