|
|
Just brought home a 79 westy and the inside of the poptop needs a cleaning. It looks like it has some sort of fuzzy coating or flocking on it (yes the bus has some mushrooms but this looks like it's meant to be there). Anyone cleaned this stuff sucessfully without destroying it ?? Any suggestions for mildew on the tent canvas ?
Thanks. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'm thinking 10% bleach solution will kill anything. Test it in a small area though, it does kill color. Any others out there with ideas? _________________ T2Gator

There is a product I get at Dollar General called "Mean Green" that works good on shower scum, as well as the mold on my house rain gutters. It's cheap, and seems fairly safe for what you need to do. BTW, what does everyone use to clean tree sap and oxidation off fiberglass pop-tops with? There is an early Bay in my hood that has been sitting for years, and I am thinking of making the guy an offer, but it is wicked nasty grunged up. |

My Vanagon top had black mold on it so I took it off the van and put it on some saw horses, used mixture of TSP(tri-sodium phosphate) and bleach on it. Didn't harm the fuzz but it looked and smelled great. Sucked all the liquid off with a shop vac. Then put on new canvas too. I did the outside with the same mixture and after it all dried a couple days painted the outside with Rustoleum enamel with a sponge roller and it looks like a new top. Tied up the garage for a whole week, but it looks like new now. _________________ Working on a VW is like fun with a friend!

This is what we did with our 77 pop top. It was so much easier with the top off the bus and upside down. It does take some effort to take the top off obviously, and we were taking it off for other reasons, but did make it easier than working upside down in the bus and hoping bleach wasn't falling on me or the bus interior!
Although I am sure some of the non-bleach solutions suggested above would work, and I would probably suggest those for interior preservation!
Good luck!

Very interesting..
I'm going to experiment with the non bleach ideas first because I don't really want to take off the top.
If they fail I'll pull out the big guns.
Thanks everyone. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Took ours off with pulleys and nylon rope rigged to the rafters in the garage. Ratchet straps across the top and ropes tied to middle of the straps. This went to the two pulleys and the ropes were tied off to other rafters once the top was lifted up. Carefully pushed the van out of the garage and then lowered the top down on saw horses. Went back on in reverse. _________________ Working on a VW is like fun with a friend!

Never thought of the super clean, awesome stuff, I'll try it.
Tried IPAlcohol and chlorine free bleach yesterday (seperately), smells better and probably killed the mildew but didn't change the appearance.
Turns out the canvas is weak in a couple of the mildewed areas so it's now testing material. I'll post my progress. Still have to try salty lemon juice as well as borax. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
