Just to update on the seal quality. I originally got my seals from CIP1, the inner seals (glass to frame) worked fine, but the outer seals (frame to body) broke at the seam about a week after the install I still hadn't even driven the car yet! Got a new pair of frame to body seals from WW, seems like the seam will hold, but we'll see. _________________ '65 Karmann Ghia 'vert

I'm just about to install pop o's in my 69... The hinge part is no biggie, but the latch with the 3 holes...
Are there holes in the metal for it already? Do I need to peek behind to find the holes?
My latches are pitted pretty bad I hope I can get them to look semi ok...

There aren't holes, but it is dimpled. When I put pop outs in my bug, I pulled the window closed and held up the latches where they would be. I found the dimples pretty easy using my fingernail, and was able to screw the hinges on without drilling out the dimples. _________________ -Adam

Ditto this. I used a sharp pick instead of a fingernail. after establishing the proximity of the latch I stuck the pick in one of the headliner holes and poked around on the metal and found the dimpled holes.
Like Otis said, "don't drill out the holes", just use the screws and an electric drill with a phillips bit.....

You may find that the new hinges will be really difficult to make fit. I ended up using old hinges that I got with the used popouts.
Problem was that the metal plate that has the threaded holes for the hinge to attach to the window frame was not mfg'ed properly. The holes would not line up...

Hot weather makes them easier to put on. Rubber is a lot more supple.
Here in SAC we are expected to hit 112deg on Sunday!
Warm dish soap and water work the best.
Do not use Armoral..

Yikes! And agreed on the heats effect on the seals and the dish soap... _________________ -Adam

Does anyone know the size of the screws for the hinge to body? I need to know the thread count and pitch along with the length. The used set of popouts I bought had the plate but not the screws with it. I could order the screws but I'm impatient and just want to go pick them up at the store.
Thanks |

I'm on the road so I can not give you the screw specs.
Go down to an Ace hardware or some good one that has a great selection of screws..
Take the metal backing block with you, it has the threads for the screws.
The screws are taper head philips. You may have to get Allen's but that's ok.
The length is not critical in length, just long enough to make it all the way thought the post and the hinge hardware. If they are a little long will be ok.
Hopefully your hinge's are the old kind... I have found that some of the new hinges from some hinge kits are impossible to make work... Getting all the holes and the threaded backing block to ling up can be problematic.
Let us know how it goes.

I think theyre aluminum. You need to remove the clear anodizing. I use oven cleaner and steel wool to remove it. then use really fine sand paper to remove scratches then use metal polish to remove the sanding scratches. _________________ -LeoDogg |

To be honest I havent done it on pop out frames, but ive done it on other trim, vin tags, motorcylce pieces , rc parts and wheels. Once you strip the clearcoat off you can polish it. It does start to lightly oxidize and get hazy after a while, but you just polish it up and its clean again. there are also wax sealers you can apply to have them last longer. Its just like polishing and maintaining any metal like mag wheels.
Do a google search for removing clearcoat from wheels to polish. Or removing anodizing.
If you try to sand out the scratches and buff them, that area will lose the clear anodizing and will not the match the rest of the frame. I also would remove all rubber before using chemicals.
This is just how I would do it; its worked for me on other aluminum. _________________ -LeoDogg |

Glad I found this thread. It answered most all my questions. But I do have one on installing the seal. I noticed on the frame where the hinge is it looks like you could undue the screws and pull one side out an 1/8". Then you could feed the rubber in the groove without all the pressure. Maybe I'm way off base here. Has any body tried this?
I just go my pop outs and will be installing them after I get new seals. |

The only downside I see is possibly stretching the inner seal just a bit- then pinching it when you retighten the screws. silicone spray and a plastic picnic knife should get the outer seal in the groove faster than trying to retighten those hoop screws IMO. _________________
