I was at a wedding reception at the Ford museum in Detroit a couple of years ago and there was a nice split Westy on display with what appeared to be a complete interior.

After a few cocktails, we snuck over to the Westy and got to snoop around it. I dont remember much from that night so unfortunately I dont recall much detail of its originality or year - but it appared to be a 66 or 67 (probably a SO23?) and looked to have been restored at one point.

Just curious - anyone ever come across this Westy in the museum or know anything about it?

Thanks,
Jack

Apparently it's a 59. Here's some photo's from the gallery. Appears to be restored, wrong emblem color, roof rack is backwards and the tag is on the wrong side. I'd still take it in a heart beat though.

That's just to complete the "look" for authenticity...

That is a Beautiful bus. Very original but repainted. In early `80s VW had a search for the oldest camper and this is the vehicle they found.
It was then restored and stuck in Henry Ford.

This bus was the basis for my Westfalia "jones" that was fevorish to the point of Lind and Greg added together in the early `90s. It really is a special bus to me. Like going to visit grandpa's house when I get up there!
LOL

Funny story is,
My good friend Tom is head of social events for Henry Ford.
Back when i was doing Camp Box News the westfalia newsletter around `94, he got me in contact with the folks in charge of that area the `59 sat in. I offered to donate them all kinds of original factory VW `59 so-23 brochures pictures and any westfalia information they needed (as well as offering to flip that damn rack around the right way Laughing ) .
They flat out said no thanks and basically shut the door in my face.

I don't think that bus been touched in 20 years! but it is a VERY nice bus despite some wrong lil things. Sweet original rockers with strong factory spot welds you can see from 15 feet away...mmmmm nice!

Agree on all points! The damn thing still appears to have oil in the engine, and I bet if you put it on a charger it would fire right up!

I am not concerned with being an idiot and asking them if they would sell it (it really doesnt fit with the theme in the museum IMOP), but I do have Ford contacts and wonder if I could find out more info on it and perhaps assist with the maintenance.

Just dreaming...

The Henry Ford Museum-Greenfield Village is a spectacular place.

Really, Ford vehciles are the minority there. It is definitely a unbiased Museum. Henry was a great character who collected everything and anything.

God they would never sell that. Why would they...like they need some cash...LOL! Bet they would get a kick if you asked them! LOL offer them $200 and a rusty super beetle.

Man, that bus fits right in perfectly there in that museum, and it has a HUGE detailed display. Actually I think that westy has one of the most prominent and largest displays in the auto section. Very cool HF to do that for a VW bus! They have a great very correct `49 beetle as well as every single auto make under the sun!

Anyone outside the area ever gets to Detroit -Dearborn the HF Museum and Greenfield Village are the highlights of the Detroit.

Cool ride.

I like the added ambiance of a oil stain under the engine area.

Or is that just a rain puddle from camping in the HO rain forest. Laughing

Thanks for the pics, the bus still looks the way it did 5 years ago. Although, it hasn't traveled very far.

Still have the rack on backwards. I bet all they do is wipe up the oil underneath, fill the tires and dust her off once a month.
