The guy told me it had a rebuilt engine, and it ran really good. I pulled off one head to drill out the broken exhaust bolt and when I looked at the head it had a crack between the valves for both cylanders!! Also where the rubber head gasket was is all pitted, I mean really bad. Is that head toast, even know it was running really good? OK to be blunt _________________ 4 speed 88 Westy |

Most Vanagons get those small cracks between the valves on the heads after a while. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is a deep deep crack. And just about every head in the entire world has pits on the sealing surface and still can be re-used. Another thing to not worry about, as long as it wasn't leaking. Some people recommend filling in the pits with JB Weld but on my engines I have had great success making sure i used good quality sealer on the heads. |

Cracks there are common. VW even specified an allowable width of a crack, but I can't find it. They can also be welded there if both valve seats are going to be replaced.
You should make sure none of the pits are within the edge area covered by the water jacket seal. I would fill those. Pitting inside of that area is of no consequence.
Also, put a bead of sealer on the end of the water jacket as well as the flat face of the seal. Make sure your beads are thin (<4mm) but continuous. |
