|
|
I asked this question in another topic ("what is this part"), but because it was off subject, it got lost in the shuffle.
So, in an 84 Westy, what is the weight limit for the upper bunk sleeping area? If my memory serves me correctly, I thought it was for children (I had a 77 Westy that I think eluded to this).
Can an average adult sleep up there? There must be a weight limit though. I could not find it in the Westy supliment I have with the owners manual.
Also, was there an option of a board of sorts that went across the front seats? I recall the early Westys having this option, but have not seen this for the later Vanagons. Was this purchasable option in 84? _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

When me and a few friends went camping, we had two people sleeping up there. I think the combined weight would have been like....350lbs. I think.
It seemed fine as long as they didn't bounce around or sit on the edge.
350 is probably pushing it a little, but It should still be fine up to that, maybe a little more....maybe.
The average adult should be A-ok.
As for the board in the front seat...I don't know. I can't remember if I've seen any of those for vanagons. Sorry. _________________ '87 Vanagon GL Westfalia

I havent seen a board for the front seats, but there is a hammock you can buy, similar to the one i used to sleep on in my parents bay. _________________ My name is Roy |

you can hold a LOT of weight up there.
although when ive had 350lbs up in the top, it does start to creek a little when you toss/turn. from the bottom I guess you can see it start to bow down a bit.
ive thought about just putting a piece of metal as another brace under the fold out part to assist, or simply replacing the old wood with something newer and maybe more durable. |

Thanks for the answers guys. Good to know.
I may get me one of those cots too. I have a feeling that the first time I go camping with my brother-in-law, his kids will be exiting his tent and making a beeline for my Westy!!! _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

The limit has to be up pretty high, it's a 3/4" thick board, with out that much span to cross. We've had 4/5 of the family up in the top of our bay lots. Sometimes 3 of us sleep up there when neither of the boys feels like using the front child's cot, maybe 300 lbs all together. It's a bit cramped, but no squeaks or worries. The cot wasn't a factory option for vanagons, like they were for bays, but it sure would be nice to have one so we have the option for slightly more spacious sleeping.

there's been at least 400 lbs up there in my 84 with absolutely no creaking at all, I don't even recall it bending |
