The ex has keys to my Westy, and I have a concern over theft. Will I need to change all the locks on it (and ignition), or can I just call a locksmith and have everything re-keyed? Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad I've disabled it to prevent her from taking it again. Don't ask. And spare me the "Get a lawyer BS"

It's not hard to re-key the cylinders. The only hard part is getting the ignition cylinder out.

Just re-keyed mine, went to the junk yard and found a good key and some tumblers and went from there. "The search" definately helped!

If you can get the whole ignition lock cylinder housing with a different key that fits it then re-keying the doors is quite easy and no other parts required.

Many of the bits from one of those $59.95 lock kits for an A1 or A2 VW will work in the Vanagon. It is a matter of moving tumblers to make the other locks. The hard one is the ignition lock and is the same as in the kit, so you just drill the little hole pop out the old and stick the new in. This whole job will take several hours.

FYI: You need a big 24mm socket to take the steering wheel off and an 8mm (or 6mm?) Allen to remove the ignition lock assembly. Any early 80s VW manual describes this job as the ignition locks were all the same in the early 80s.

Hide the van from the X in the mean time. How about one of those self storage places that have the first month free?
