So I just dropped 90 bucks with shipping on a case of Brad Penn 20w50. Isn't this just what I should be running in a new 2332 with 140 miles on it? _________________ Royals 2015 World Champions

ok I'm getting conflicting information I think...
I have lots of people telling me that a synthetic 10w-40 would be good for my 1776 with about 15,000 on it. I am looking for something to improve the longevity of the engine. I currently run 10-30 dino oil...
After reading the above graph, SAE 10w-40 would not be reccomended for So. Cal temps, but youre supposed to go with a heavier weight with synthetics correct??
Most of this cars driving time is either 10 mile round trip to work, or anywhere from 100-200 mile round trip to shows. Synthetic would not be a good choice in this case? Would a blend be better? Would 10w-40 be too light? _________________ --------------------------------------------------------

He seems to disapprove of 20W 50 highly, and yet lots of people run 20W 50. |

I sent an email to Castrol about the zinc content in their reformulated Syntec for older cars, here's the reply:
"Thank You for Contacting Castrol,
Here is the information regarding our new Syntec 20w-50 for Classic Cars.
Castrol Syntec 20W-50 (Recent reformulation identified by "Recommended for Classic Cars" text on back label) (min Zn = 0.12 = 1200 ppm)(full synthetic)

i found a case of Kendall Super D-3 on clearance at a local store ($24). Its a 10W-30 for diesels but has 1450ppm of zinc. I'm running it in my low mile Bug motor right now. Oil pressure is good. I'll wait and see how it does in the summer. _________________ 1FUNBUG

Years ago doesnt count, because the reduced zinc formulas are very recent.
I also depends on which Castrol formula. If it is made and marketed in North America, it will not have the same content or meet the same specs. BMW dealers sell a different Castrol 5W-30 synthetic than they sell at PepBoys, Walmart, etc. 0W-30 Syntec sold at Autozone is the Made in Germany stuff that meets the German carmakers specs, but not the other grades on the shelf. Read the back of the bottle. |

Ok, I think I understand what is being explained here, and I will be changing my oil for the summer months soon, so living in Southern California, my 1776 with an external oil filter, and about 15,000 miles on it, would be ok with something like a 10w-40 Royal Purple correct?
Right now the engine has Castrol 10w-30 dino oil, and it runs ok, but i think it could run better in the summer with syn oil..
thanks guys! _________________ --------------------------------------------------------

Anyone tried the "old-school" Castrol 20W-50 oil that comes in a metal can, like back in the day? I've thought about gettin' a can of it an trying it out, can't be much worse than the standard 10W-40 shell oil I ran before the tear down. _________________ 1970 Beetle

When summer comes I'm gonna run castroil synttec 20w-50. Another thing I saw was that casteroil's HD 30w and 40w have a fair amount of ZDDP (zinc) to protect your cam. I'm running 2006 roteller. |

There's a thread over on Jake's forum showing the testing we've done, for horsepower comparisons, to date. First test was back in July '07, the lastest was just last week (Jan '0, a few pages in with graphs posted on page 4, I think.
The results were as different as night and day. I'm not sure anyone has posted a link to it yet, but Jake and I made a little video about this last round of oil testing and posted it on YouTube:
