|
|
I pulled apart my oil filter today to have a look at the paper element. I noticed some copper or brass coloured flakes, not a lot but more than I would have expected. Where could this material be coming from? Filter was on for about 5000kms. Engine is a 2.0 AC with 186,000 kms on the bottom end. |

Inner bearing material or distributor drive gear or possibly valve guides. Regardless, that's not a good sign.

Did you manually turn the engine backwards by hand recently? |

Could be the distributor drive. The heads are new and so are the rod bearings.

I have been turning backwards, how would that cause brass contamination? |

You didn't say that before.
How did it get rod bearings without getting rings?
And what were you asking about flakes in the OF? |

Turning backward is hard on the distributor drive gear... _________________ Scott

The PO changed the rod bearings, pistons, rings, sleeves, heads,etc.. just before I bought the van. I did get some plain bearing material in the first filter after I bought the van but that has stopped. The brass is new so just wanted to know if anyone else had seen that before. I will cut apart the filter at the next oil change to see if it is getting worse.
Is the distributor drive gear hard to get out? |
