Smoking generator

so what do you guys think? My generator started smoking today. Small whisps of white smoke! Is it time to replace it or what?

USe this procedure on my web site to check the operations of the generator, battery and regulator - it will help diagnose any faults so you know what's causing the problem.

Also have a look at the brushes in the generator (the top one is visible through the slots). It should be long enough to still project out the top of the rectangular holder, and it has a flattish spring pushing on the back of it. If it's worn down the spring cannot maintain enough pressure and it will become unreliable.
