On the left a VW38 (prototype).
On the right a VW39 (also prototype).
Watch the licenseplate: (IIIA-)43036
(the last proto VW38 had licensplate IIIA-43027)
another picture can be seen here:
http://www.bugland.be/Verschillende_Vw-types_testwagens.html#Vw_39
The VW39 was the last series of prototypes, the production series (type60) had indeed the same bumpers. |

Those VW38 prototypes are amazing! So much different from the later prototypes and the production KdF models. They had some weird structural differences like the sharp angles on the top corners of the decklid and hood, the lack of recess under the doorhandle and press down door handles. Internally the side panels seem to stretch from the normal position, as in later beetles, all the way into the rear luggage area. I love those old pictures

I don't believe so, but there were rumors of a prototype seen in East Germany before the wall came down. As far as I know, it has not been re-discovered. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

"That's not a prototype Rich. Is it????"
It is a kind of prototype. But one of the Karmann verts.
Note the semaphores in the front quarter panel instead of the later location behind the doors.

Yes some parts have shown up: Christian in Germany and his Dad have most of a rolling chassis I think of a type 38 prototype as well as most of an engine? I think.
The remaining Berlin Rome racer is on a spare type 38 chassis, though not its original one. Why the swap no one seems to know The OG chassis was another left over NOS type 38 chassis. A number of these chassis, both unused and ones from the domolished 38 prototypes were used as test vehicle chassis. During the war a number of these vehicles were around for testing and later for use. IE it is possible that a complete chassis might show up, but very doubtful for a body to show up. though there was at least one still around in early 45 I believe from dated photos. (in burned out condition, so others mightr have susvived beyond then)

Glad to see your on track again and not researching Heb's. That model I believe is a '49. What I noticed more than anything are what seems to appear as small raised intake vents along the back quarter panel. Thinking about doing that to a cal-look car I have. |
