Not a whine, but I wanted to add this link here. it's posted in the bus section incorrectly. This appears to be a crank start bar for a split bug and not a bus. _________________ ----VW's in my garage----

I counted 7 different sheet metal details that confirms what you said. _________________

Body number is January 1954 right? It's a total fraud to call it a 1950 car. |

Body number is September 1955. There are a lot of '54-'55 parts on the car, including some '55-only parts (engine lid and doors). My thinking is this car started as a late '55 rollover(?) wreck, which is why is has a '56 body shell. The heater control is hidden in the photos, which makes me think the pan is also '55.
Passenger seat is '55 or older; driver's side is later.
Engine appears to be '60 accessories installed onto a factory-rebuilt '58 case.
This car eerily reminds me of Garth's '46, which was for sale in the classifieds for years. _________________ Thanks,

I meant to say September 1955, which was 55712. Corrected it in my post above.
The "Made in Western Germany" tag replaced the "Made in Germany" tag sometime in 1955. _________________ Thanks,

What does it mean by "period correct" engine? Correct decade? Correct century? Or maybe it's a correct month.... |

When I see stuff like this for sale it irks me to know someone may now try to build a fake split and use this to legitimize it.
Or it's just cool wall art...

Maybe we need a sticky and all these types of things are documented there. And a search of the vin or body number will easily find them. |

Does anyone know what happened to the listing for a '52 split that was for sale yesterday for a short time? The car was supposedly solid, in Connecticut, and was $7k. Username was new, cardude67. No phone number. I made an offer higher than asking price but never heard back. I'm just wondering if it was legit. _________________ 1944 Kubelwagen, Restored

I have to rant a bit about this seller: EnzoVw
He's selling this hand crank as split Beetle etc.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2430326
The length of it from the pulley bolt to the first bend is far too short to work on a Beetle. Notice how it has a smaller diameter pin in the end of it? That's to go in the pulley bolt that has a hole in it. That type of bolt was only installed in 1970s military Type 181s. That means this crank is just a common 70s part.
Next up is this rear hood handle:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2523026
No, it does NOT fit a Beetle, the threaded stud end is far too short. Many years ago, I did some research and determined it is for a Gogomobil. This seller has been told it doesn't fit a beetle, but he still attempts to defraud the unsuspecting buyer. _________________

The crank handle may be for an Industrial engine too, they use that same pin.
The decklid handle he gives some details in his ad text but I agree there is still a good chance someone won't read it and buy it anyway to find out it will not work. _________________ How to Post Photos

Not to mention that doing much of anything with that would be a felony in most states. _________________ Chris

Perhaps it would be good to list these in the Split Registry? It could be listed as "VIN Tag Body number sheet metal only". _________________ Chris

^ looking at the numbers suggests a march 52 car. it's obviously had a new interior including headliner. the deck lid T handle is not correct and the bumpers should be the earlier grooved ones. looks like maybe a front valence repair/replacement and a patch on the heater channel closing plate. cant make out if those wheels are the 16 inch they should be. heater outlets should be circular(?). however a main point is that the car does not have crotch coolers which would indicate a standard model (unless they've been cut out/filled) in which case there should be no chrome, three spoke steering wheel and no grille in the front wing. was 10/11 A the standard model - I can't remember? think I can see cable brakes so maybe a standard updated with deluxe stuff? any history known, says it's from croatia? _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut
