Best bet is to head to your local bookstore and purchase a book on how carbs work. Usually, it is a book by carb manufacturer Holley (very well known) that will give you an idea of how the carb works and then go into how to modify it.

A quick lesson, though:
Basically, a carb is just a metering device. If you look at it, it has a plate down near it's base (not the choke plate). When this plate is opened (the job of the throttle pedal) engine vacuum acts on the fuel in a float bowl (basically a storage area for the fuel that comes from the fuel pump) and draws it into the main carb throat where it is atomized and sent to the engine via the intake manifold. The more air that is drawn in the more fuel you get drawn in with it. Simple premise. Of course there are various systems that operate within the carb to insure smooth running in all conditions, but that is getting a bit deeper into the story of how a carb works. Hope this help a little.

Chris
