while I have to admire the work and effort that went into this, my only reservation would have to be the fuel tank mounted in the nose.... _________________ póg mo thóin

Glad you enjoyed the truck work! The original idea was a small work truck to hall trash to the land fill, but it just got out of hand! We have other pics on the other half of the idea.... There was another trailer, which consisted of a smaller wooden bed to haul trash!
The rig was sold in the late 70's to finance a move to a larger facility, for more creativity. Last I heard about it, was 20+ years ago. I hope it hasn't gone down hill too much.
Rear tag axle was a non powered floater, spring loaded side to side so it could run slightly out of track to prevent excessive tire wear while making tight corners.
1600 engine on interstate was not a good idea. Long uphill grades were at times 35 MPH and other rigs would be passing going up to 25 MPH faster making some anxious moments. On the level, I could manage about 60-65 MPH.
Fuel tank and grille combo was to give normal water cooled truck appearance, not to push an air cooled heritage.
Brakes, OH ME - tractor frint stock 59 van, drive axle - 63 Type III backing plates w/ 5 lug early drums, (Try and find some of those today!) tag axle - 67 type I drums - no backing plates or shoes.
Trailer axle : 70 cadilac El Dorado stock dropped axle with all Caddy hydraulic parts. Note: a seperate beetle hydraulic master cylinder was mounted on floating 5th wheel mount to apply trailer brakes whenever trailer started pushing the tractor. This was especially handy when slowing down headed downhill. In event of a panic stop this worked amazingly well.
Thanks... let me know if there are any more questions!

That bus is so cool on so many levels. It has to be floating around out there somewhere. Put Randy Carlson on the scent. He'll be able to turn it up.
I don't think it would be all that hard to replicate using todays technology. _________________ Yeah I like Herbie AND New Beetles. Got a problem with it? Tough.

The "abortions" thread is reserved for nasty looking, mal-engineered, vomitous masses that were once VW's (i.e. - snorkelstang). This rig is a masterpiece. |

Yes, several months ago. It may not be an abortion, but it certainly is a home-made bastard! |

Actually it is for "your" opinion of an abortion, There is alot of cool stuff in that thread. The flip side is that alot of people get butt hurt when they see something they like get put in there. Great truck BTW. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.
