My 71 1302S is RHD. I thought they were built for the American market. If this were so wouldn't mine be a LHD vehicle.

All beetles were built in both LHD and RHD versions, because there are still lots of places in the world driving on the "other" side of the road.
The 71 1302 is no different - plenty of them here in Australia (which is RHD).
Plenty in the UK (RHD) too.
