| Disconnect the brake light wires from the brake light switch(es) on the master cylinder. Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder. Plug the lines. Unscrew the brake light switches from the master cylinder. Save them for the new MC. Loosen the bolts holding the MC to the body from inside the driver footwell. You shouldn't have to disconnect the pushrod from the pedal, which is good because you don't want to mess with the pushrod adjustment. Before you pull the bolts out, make sure you reach in and catch the spacer that is around each bolt between the wheel well wall and the footwell wall. You'll need to put these back in when you install the new MC. They keep the walls from collapsing when you tighten the bolts. Now gently knock the MC off (if it's old it's probably stuck to the wall), and reverse the procedure for the new MC. Go easy on the brake line nuts as the metal is kind of soft and if you tighten too much you'll collapse them. Bleed the brakes. I'm sure I've missed something but others will chime in. |

| 79vert covered it pretty much. You need to have a bentley, or similar VW manual though, as there has to be a small amount of play in the brake pedal, before the pushrod contacts the master cylinder. This is an adjustment of the acutal pedal assembly. There is a screw near the brake pedal that is loosened that either increases or decreases the amount of play. |
