It's still amazing me to see people take things from nothing to spectacular and this is no exception. I just wish I had the time and the money to do something like that to mine!

Thanks for the photos!
The table mount in the back is also GREAT!

He did a good job. He did make some mistakes, that yes only he can see, but a few I can too. There are reasons why you do not want to do a color change! My 85 is the color I wanted. For me, white is the right for a Westy. But, that red is nice too. Now I think even a Westy can get a speeding ticket. So he is going to keep it. I almost thought he should have converted to a syncro right away. Ya need that in Canada. Don't you, eh? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I know, it's an old post but i stumble on it, i feel concern
What Mistake? I'm curious.. unless you are talking about extrem minor esthetic one (even if i don't know).
I hated the original color... it was supose to be black, but it's red because i cut myself to many time on it... it's the color of my blood.
Since that restoration last year, i have put 29,000miles including a trip to Mexico.

All i did is... well, oil change...
And hey, i just hate Syncro...

I think i know my job bro... i can show you over 9 restorations and over 60 engine rebuilt, not including the 15 Subi conversion i did.

oooooo.......SHINY!!!! me want shiny.
i must say that thing is killer. love the smoked turn signals. i woudn't put leather seats in though. they would end up getting torn up and cracked from the elements and the abuse of luggage, clothes, ski equipment, sand, dirt, pets, etc... would demolish it in 2 seconds. _________________ -Matt |

False! This is marine leather LIKE product! This is way better than anything else.
The guy who does my seat is an "Airplane interior guy".... Those seat are simply fabulous. I won't ever go back the the OEM style., NEVER!
It's been one year now and they look better and better each day.
They can be clean so easy with only "Spraynet".

The only "mistake" I see is the side awning should be larger, LOL!
Smashing job, I though I was the only one that used that bubble foil for insulation, and in the roof too! I'm going to have to stop by your shop soon. |

I agree with Ben on the use of leather. I've always heard "if you have pets you don't want leather, they'll tear it up" but I couldn't disagree more. I LOVED the first leather seats I had in a car (a 93 Passat GLX). That's when I discovered that leather seats are the BEST for pets.
Muddy paws on the seat? Wipes right off.
Little bit of drool (from the dogs, not me)? Wipes right off.
Geriatric dog have an accident? Cleans up easily (Hey, he was 17, and we loved that dog, we didn't care!)
Scratches from claws? Never happened.
The secret, I think, is getting a good quality automotive leather. Tough, durable, smooth, kinda hard finish.
Ben, your seats inspired me. I might check with SewFine to see how much a set of leather replacement seat upholstery would cost me. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

sweet ride....clearly demonstates that anything is possible with time and money. Not as clear on why you felt like you needed to defend yourself over a year-old thread ("feel concern"...to defend your decisions?...I wouldn't let it bother you)...but hey, I enjoyed the picture show. thanks _________________ '77 Bay Window / '89 Caratsburg (aka. the Stormtrooper) |

When you have a site like mine... you have over 15 to 30 e-mail per day, of course i can't answer them all. I would say 5% of those are... let say; are not pleasant. Some are in regard of my English (it's far from perfect but i think it's good enought) and believe it or not, even about my French... not to talk about people who are just trying to piss me off. So when you read those in the morning with a nice coffe... or with a few beers at night (this is not a good time to piss me off!)... some of those piss you off pretty bad.
In life, i like people who do criticize, but are constructive and polite wile doing it!
I try to learn from my mistake, but if people are not clear about those, or simply are not enough mature and/or diplomat. They simply piss me off... and i'm pissed off pretty easy I have been banned more than once for being pretty rough online...
But you are right, i should just let it go... and i'm trying hard.
I think some didn't catch that i'm doing that mostly for fun... and it's completely free. I'm asking nothing and i don't expect nothing, but a nice little thanks once in a wile is pretty cool.
Respect!
To the other intelligent one, many thanks for your commments

Not to hijack the thread... but what kind of fuel economy did you get during your trip to Mexico with that beautiful Subi/Westy of your's, Ben?

I'm not good with fuel calculation, but here is an easy one:
6 vans, we fill up all. Including Hans with the SVX 6cyl.
We stop a few hours later (don't want to take any chance):
I put 30 liters (1 liter = .265 gallons)
Hans put 35
Frank put 41
Speed was low, around 90-95 kmh (55-60mph)
So at that speed, i gain 1 fuel tank at each 4.
The 1.9TD was doing more than me of course. i would say 1/4 more.
