First off want to say “Hi” this is my first post. I’m a long time lurker and want to say thanks for the information I have scavenged from you guys over the past year!
I am having little problem with my 67 so42, when accelerating from a stop, or accelerating from low rps’s (in any gear) I am getting a “popping” sound and slight jerking, it sounds somewhat like a small backfire, or a what i like to call a "series of hiccups.” As soon as the rpm get up the problem goes away and it drives great… Any ideas? -and yes I have tried searching for a solution…
The engine is stock, minus a header and quiet pack exhaust.
Thanks for the help! |

I had the same problem with mine, and I have an aftermarket exhaust on a 1776. I checked the timing, carb adjustment, jets, plug wires, plugs, etc, etc. A friend suggested it might be the header system leaking. Sure enough that what it was. The gasket between the header and the muffler was getting blow by on one side. I removed the muffler and ended up having to grind the flange a bit to get a flatter surface. Replaced the gasket and the backfiring stopped.
