a 56 too, here's the one I found just last month & bought. I rented a car with the wife and kids and drove from Santa Maria,Ca to Kelowna, BC, Canada.. 27 hours dropped off the rental..and drove the 56 back home, 1740 miles... Via Kelowna to vancouver, ferry to victoria ferry to Port Angeles, Wash..... and all the way down the 101 back home. He's called the "Bullet" and he's a 56 Oval Canadian Custom Standard.(it's the one I asked Rich kimball at the hotel at the classic if he knew someone that owned a silver vw oval in kelowna, BC and had an ovals only decal in the window, I saw it in a picture and heard, the guy might be selling it... Rich didn't know, but I found him..)

Interesting. I thought Canadian Deluxes used semaphores as well. |
Canada was always considered North America, and Canada received the turn signal change along with the U.S. The Deluxe Sedan was basically identical to the U.S. model, but they did also have this Canadian Custom, which was available right up to the mid 60s. I found a '65 in a junkyard in Ontario with a 36hp engine with fresh-air heating, stock. I pilfered the white three-spoke steering wheel for my oval.
And yes, Kool1 is my hero. |

That is a very nice car. I spotted it in another thread. Looks solid from the pics as well. Why don't you post a bunch in your gallery of some details such as the interior. I'd like to see what you've got for upholstery, if it any of it remains. Maybe mine will look purty on e day, but it will be a shame to stop driving it, enough for a short while.
*Stolen, another Canadian car* Good to see it in good hands though.

yup, a friend of mine saw it, stopped in a spoke with the guy, it wasn't for sale but would be, the price was 5,500 canadian (no nego) he was going to buy it and flip it, but couldn't get the money, and I ask him for infor and ask the guy if he had a problem selling to a cali guy.. nope and worked of the deal after the owner told me all of the car, wire the green, got a week off, rented a car and headed north to a place I loved and visited as a kid, and got to hunt for the ogopogo with my kids, drove it all the way home what 1740 miles, and two ferry's rides.... best vacation ever _________________ Herbie's Heroes Founder

That's odd. I had an all original 64 Canadian Standard that had a 40 horse and an oval era two spoke steering wheel. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

I think there are a couple small differences throughout the years. A friend of mine has a '59 with the three spoke, but we have also seen early '60's with the two spoke as well as the three.
Mine has Ivory seat bases, shifter and e-brake, but the latter two have black knobs. My bases I'm assuming are original, as the springs are put in after the paint, so I doubt these three things were painted of installed later. Kool1, Envious and Stevo_32 have these parts in black.
Here's Envious' interior. Who knows, it may have had the ivory shift knob. I think there are more inconsistencies than with Euro standards.

Here some pics of an original 64 canadian standard...too sad he will not live again but the steering wheel is in my garage.
Note dash grille and black knob. They added a white one.No gas gauge.

just thought I might reignite this thread ....years ago I saw a Red 76 Cdn "Standard" so they made them right to the end
I remember houndstooth cloth interior centre headliner no chrome two spoke steering wheel swing axle trans pretty neat piece but I was building the 57 at the time.
Might still be around the owner was putting new floor pans and channels in, he had no idea what a custom was!
Also had a buddy who parted some 70-73 Cdn "stds" customs back in the 90's
Anybody got a late model???pics? _________________ DORMOBILE TOP WANTED!!!!

I know 2 of those standard in the area both 75, one red and one yellow both have small headliner and have (had) black moulding and bumpers. The headliner of the red is black and the car was fuel injected! I need to ask for the second one...In canada in the early 70th they made some beetle with swingaxle, I have a 73 pan with that set up but those beetle looks like ordinary beetle from the outside...We can look to start a new tread in the beetle section (late model).

Started a new tread yesterday on the Beetle/superbeetle section and I had interesting answers.

I know that canadian standards are a good subject but in that case it seems that these cars were sold in Canada and USA.
