I am a WI Thing owner, and twice I have seen Things in this state. I know there have to be more! In fact my Thing came from MN, so I know the Midwest isn't completely Thing deficient!
Any Midwest (IN, WI, MN, IL, MI, IA) area owners on this forum? I am currently looking at possibly purchasing another Thing, so if any of you spot one for sale, I'd love to know! Thanks for reading:!: |

The VW club that I belong to, Northern Illinois Volkswagen Club, has several members that own Things.
There is also the Harsh Winters VW Club that serves the Chicagoland area.
Try contacting these clubs to see if they can pass your name to other Thing owners.
Check around for other clubs that may be closer to you.
That would be a good place to start to find other like-minded enthusiasts close to you.
The Chicago Tribune recently ran an article stating that there are currently 152 VW Things registered in the state of Illinois.
They're out there .............somewhere. |

my thing came from milwalkee. WI.
but it came to CA in about 1975.
seems backward that it would come to CA from WI |

I live in Illinois but work a couple days a week in Madison. I was driving around last fall and saw an orange Thing sticking out of a garage. Didn't look drivable. So we know there is at least one in central Wisconsin. |

I'm in Marion, Iowa, but my Thing came from Minnesota. My dad bought it from Amdahl Motors in Pipestone, MN about 15 years ago. It still has their sticker on the back. I'm not sure where it was before that, because they restored it.
There's at least one more around here (Cedar Rapids area), and I'm sure there are more I don't know about. _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

Currently I have my pumpkin orange Thing in Stevens Point, WI. Haven't had it on the road in about 5 years. I bought it in Madison, WI at a dealership in 1993. I had it there for a year or so before I moved to SP. It had a previous owner in Madison (it was there for several years). It has a Colorado dealer emblem from the original dealership and was also previously titled in Oregon, I'm guessing sometime in the 70's or maybe the early 80's. I haven't seen another one in Wisconsin, but it sounds as if there are a few. Saw one on E-Bay half a year ago or so that had a seller listed from somewher in northern WI. |

Yes, I'm down in Milwaukee with my 73 frame-off restored THING and getting ready for Volksfest on June 9th at Concours Motors. Milwaukee Area VW Club is the promoter. There'll be scads of vintage VW's there plus a few THING's including mine. If you've ever wanted to see what a stock one looked like on the showroom floor, it's mine |

Umm...no diamonds needed. I had to let him sell my 66 bug, I creid, but can't wait to get on the road with the new Thing.
We've got about 15 acres here and my son and I spent a few hours driving on the property. My hubby said it was like being on a redneck safari!
Love It!!! |

I have a 73.. located in Minnesota... we have at least 25 of them here that I know of.
If you're looking to buy.. scan OHIO.. for some reason they frequently come up for sale there.
If you know the owner's name of a MN Thing - chances are I know of them and can dig up the history.
